Mbangue Leads Top-Seeded RMC Men’s Hoops past #9 FC

SALEM, Va. – Junior Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) scored a career-high 25 points and registered his first double-double of the season with 11 rebounds as the second-ranked and top-seeded Randolph-Macon men's basketball team outscored ninth-seeded Ferrum 75-61 on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2023 ODAC Tournament to extend its win streak to 23 games.

How it Happened:

  • Mbangue had a layup on the game's first possession and junior Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) added a three-pointer as the Yellow Jackets took a 5-0 lead two minutes into the contest. The Panthers tied the game at 8-8 before senior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) had a layup and freshman Bryce Scott (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) had a follow to give RMC a 12-8 edge with 11:35 remaining in the first half. A layup by senior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) put the Yellow Jackets up six at 20-14 with 7:30 left. The Panthers tallied five straight points to pull within one before Talbert had five points in an 11-0 run as RMC took a 31-19 lead with 3:25 remaining. A Mbangue layup put the Yellow Jackets up 13 at 34-21 with 2:05 left before going to the locker room with a 37-25 halftime lead. RMC had 16 field goals and all but one were layups. Talbert and Mbangue both scored 11 points, while Mbangue grabbed five rebounds.
  • FC had the first bucket of the second stanza before field goals by Talbert and Mbangue followed by a free throw by Mallory pushed the lead to 15 at 42-27 with 17:40 remaining. The Panthers used a 14-3 spurt to pull within four at 45-41 before Mbangue hit four free throws to spark a 9-2 run as the Yellow Jackets led 54-43 with 9:15 left. A one-hander in the lane by Mbangue extended the lead to 14 at 61-47 with 4:10 remaining. RMC would record the 75-61 victory.
