More news about: Hope

Official Hope College blue isn't just warming on the Flying Dutchmen basketball team. They're all in on it.

The Flying Dutchmen won their third consecutive game wearing their blue road jerseys on Wednesday night, defeating visiting Adrian College, 82-63, in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament.

Hope also saw two individual scoring milestones reached wearing blue uniforms. Senior Evan Thomas became the 19th Flying Dutchmen men's basketball player to reach the 1,300-point career milestone. Senior Clayton Dykhouse became the 44th Hope men's basketball player to score 1,000 career points.

"We don't have any white (jerseys). I can't find them," head coach Greg Mitchell joked afterward.

Added Thomas, "We've been playing a little better (with blue jerseys). "Now we're keeping them. It's nice now that we're away, now we're going to be wearing blue."

Third-seeded Hope (17-9 overall) advanced to face second-seeded Trine University in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament. Tipoff is on Friday, Feb. 24, at 5:30 p.m. at Calvin University.

The Hope-Trine winner moves on to the championship game on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 7:30 p.m. at Calvin to meet either top-seeded Calvin or fourth-seeded Olivet College.

Against Adrian, the Flying Dutchmen led from start to finish after jumping out to a 10-0 lead in the opening 2 minutes, 21 seconds.

The Bulldogs (7-19) battled back but could not get closer than one point. Hope opened the second half with an 11-5 run that extended its lead to 50-40 4 ½ minutes in.

During the first half, Dykhouse (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) propelled the Flying Dutchmen with 17 of his game-high 25 points.

Dykhouse finished the game shooting 61.1% from the field (11-18), including 50% from 3-point range (3-6). Dykhouse now has 1,002 points in 91 games.

During the second half, Thomas (Okemos, Michigan / Okemos) and sophomore center Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) powered Hope.

Thomas delivered eight of his 14 points after halftime as well as four of his career-high seven assists. Thomas now has 1,303 points in 81 games.

Quillan erupted for 16 of his 22 points during the second half. Quillan shot 81.8% from the field for the game (9-11).

Hope shot 58.9% from the field for the game, including 45% from 3-point range (9-20).

"I thought Adrian had a great game plan. They were dialed in. It was a game of little runs, then stiff arms," Mitchell said. "I told the guys that's what great teams do. They take advantage of a segment, then you have to sustain it. It wasn't the cleanest game, but it was a disciplined IQ game. We're playing for 40 more minutes. That's what we want to do."

Mitchell was thrilled as well as Dykhouse and Thomas achieved career milestones during the final home game of the season.

"Those were two huge milestones," Mitchell said. "These are two guys who have been mainstays for me as a coach. I think back to when they came back in as recruits, we were so excited about that class. In the blink of an eye, and it's four years. They are just special men."
