BALTIMORE, MD – The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team beat visiting Dickinson, 71-53, on Senior Night to earn its 20th win of the season.
The Blue Jays improve to 20-3 overall and 14-2 in the Centennial Conference, while extending their win streak to 10. The Red Devils fall to 6-17 on the season and 4-12 in the conference.
Holding a five-point lead coming out of the half, Hopkins broke the game open with four consecutive three-pointers in a span of just one minute and 50 seconds. Dickinson halted the run with a 7-3 spurt to make it a 13-point game at the 15:13 to play in the game. But a Lincoln Yeutter triple and a Charlie Jackson three-point play quickly pushed the lead to 19 just 69 seconds later.
The Red Devils responded with seven straight points to cut the lead to 12. The teams then swapped scores over the next minute and nine seconds and the Blue Jays led 49-37. Brian Johansson then hit one of two free throws to spark a 13-4 run that saw Hopkins push its lead to 21 with 5:34 on the clock. Dickinson kept battling and got within 13 twice in the final five minutes, Hopkins had answer each time. JHU would score the final seven points of the game to account for the 71-53 final.
Hopkins jumped out to a 13-4 lead on the strength of a trio of three-pointers from Jayden Nixon, Carson James and John Windley. The teams traded buckets over the ensuing five minutes as the lead seesawed between seven and nine points. A pair of Aaron Bailey free throws, followed by Blessing Agbonlaho layup pulled the Red Devils back within five with 5:25 to go in the half.
Nixon pushed the lead back to eight with a bucket from downtown, but Luke Spellman answered with a triple of his own to make it a 20-15 game. It was back-and-forth over the final four minutes and Hopkins took a 24-19 lead into the half.
Windley led the Blue Jays with 15 points, along with four rebounds. Nixon scored a career-high 14 points and also grabbed a team-best six rebounds. Johansson added nine points. Martin Mann scored 15 points to lead Dickinson, while Isaiah Edmond added 11 points. Agbonlaho had a team-best six rebounds, while Bailey chipped in eight points and five boards.
Notes: Hopkins has now won 20 games in each of the last three seasons and four of five under head coach Josh Loeffler.
