No. 17 Hampden-Sydney Rallies For Come-From-Behind Road Win At Ferrum 82-77

FERRUM, Va. -- Junior Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) posted his 10th double-double with 12 points—all in the second half—and a game-high 10 rebounds to lead 17th-ranked Hampden-Sydney College to a come-from-behind 82-77 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball road win at Ferrum College on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers trailed 32-27 at halftime, and fell behind 47-33 with 15:46 remaining, but used a late 15-0 run while taking their first lead of the contest with 4:08 left (68-67)—outscoring the Panthers 23-10 over the final 5:13 for the hard-fought victory. Juniors Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) and DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA) each added 11 points, while senior Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) and junior Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) each contributed 10 points—all in the second half—for H-SC (19-4, 13-1 ODAC), who earned its 10th-straight win, and its 17th win in the last 18 games. Deshone Hicks, the ODAC's leading scorer, had a game-high 26 points for the FC (9-15, 5-10 ODAC), while Calvin Washington added 22 points.

"What a gritty win today," said fourth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "Those guys really jumped all over us to start the game and it took us a long time to wake up. Kudos to our guys for staying neutral and making the adjustments down the stretch. ODAC road games are never easy!"

H-SC, ranked 17th in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25, fell behind 18-6 at 11:40 of the first half as Washington scored eight early points for FC. A three-point field goal off the bench by sophomore Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) at 11:21 started an 11-2 run by the Tigers to close to within 20-17 with 7:41 on the clock, the quick outburst including a three-pointer by Wright and five points from Hardy, including a conventional three-point play inside. The visitors were within 26-23 at 2:22 following a pair of free throws off the bench by freshman Ryan Blakey (Accokeek, MD), but the Panthers led 32-27 at the intermission as Washington (14) and Hicks (8) combined for 22 first-half points.

FC extended its advantage early in the second half, leading 38-27 at 19:12 after a pair of quick three-pointers by Hicks, but H-SC answered with a three-pointer from Wright and two free throws by Hubbard to get to within 38-31 at 18:36. The Panthers took their largest lead of the contest at 47-33 with 15:46 remaining after another three-pointer by Hicks, but the Tigers responded with nine-straight points to close to within 47-42 at 13:10—getting points from Clements, senior Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) [three-pointer], Brazil and Hubbard. The hosts still led by 10 points at 54-44 with 11:15 left, before the Garnet & Grey began their methodical comeback … first closing to within 60-55 at 7:57 following a three-pointer off the bench by Turner.

FC still led 67-59 with 5:25 on the clock after a jumper from Hicks, but H-SC put together one of its patented scoring runs—this one of the 15-0 variety—to lead 74-67 with 2:01 remaining. Turner started it with another three-pointer, followed by back-to-back three-pointers from Brazil—the second for the first lead of the day (68-67, 4:08)—two free throws by Hubbard, and four points from Hardy. Another three-pointer by Hicks made it 74-70 at 1:08, but the Tigers closed the contest with a slam dunk by Hubbard before securing the outcome with 6-6 free throws from Brazil (2-2) and Clements (4-4) over the final 38.9-seconds for the well-earned triumph.

Hubbard led H-SC with his 10th double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, scoring all of his points in the second half, adding three assists and two steals. Hardy and Wright each finished with their respective 11 points for the Tigers, with Hardy adding six rebounds and Wright adding two assists. Turner and Brazil each had their respective 10 points, and each scoring all of their points in the second half—a season-high for Turner. Clements contributed nine points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Harris, McGowan and Blakey each added five points. H-SC shot 47% (27-58) from the field, including 40% (8-20) on three-pointers, and 83% (20-24) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 29-4 advantage in bench points, while +12 at the free throw line.

Hicks, the ODAC's leading scorer, led FC with his game-high 26 points, adding a game-high seven assists, as well. Washington had 22 points and six rebounds for the Panthers, while Kam Harris contributed 14 points. FC shot 53% (31-59) from the field, including 29% (7-24) on three-pointers, and 80% (8-10) at the line.

H-SC is enjoying its highest national ranking since 2012-13 (16th, Week 13), and the Tigers' 19 overall wins, as well as the 13 conference wins, are the most under Coach Kimbrough since he took over prior to the 2019-20 season. It's also the program's highest win totals since 2012-13 (23-5, 14-2)—the last season that H-SC advanced to the NCAA Tournament, as well.

The Tigers return for their final regular season conference home game against the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday night, February 15, at 7 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House.
