Graduate student guard Danny Frauenheim was one of three Spartans with 20 or more points and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career, as the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team topped New York University 96-92 on Sunday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.
The Spartans have now won four-straight games and five of their last six to improve to 16-3 overall and 6-3 in the University Athletic Association. CWRU remained one game back of WashU in the conference standings and tied for second with Carnegie Mellon and Emory with five games remaining in the regular season.
The CWRU win also completed the Spartans' season sweep of the Violets, who fell to 13-7 overall with a 2-7 conference mark.
Frauenheim finished the game with 20 points on a seven-for-14 shooting effort, including two-for-six on three-point attempts, and added a game-high eight assists. Included in his performance was a layup with 14:39 left in the second half that put him at the 1,000-point plateau for his career, which includes his first three seasons of collegiate basketball at Susquehanna.
Senior forward Cole Frilling led all players in the game with 22 points and 10 rebounds to notch his eighth double-double of the season. Graduate student guard Mitch Prendergast finished the game with 21 points, and sophomore forward Umar Rashid added 13 points, 10 of which came in the second half of the game.
The Spartans and the Violets went back and forth during a high-scoring first half of action. CWRU led by as many as six early on, going ahead 21-15 with 12:51 left on a layup by Frauenheim. However, the Violets remained close, eventually taking the lead, and going ahead by as many as five points. Down 48-43 with 1:08 left in the opening half, the Spartans rallied late in the period. Frauenheim connected on a three-pointer to cut the NYU advantage to a pair and then drew an intentional foul with eight seconds left, giving the Spartans a pair of free throws and the ball back. After Frauenheim made both attempts from the charity stripe, Prendergast hit a layup at the buzzer to give CWRU a 50-48 lead heading into halftime.
CWRU finished the first half shooting 63.6% overall and 50.0% from three-point range, while NYU shot 54.5% from the floor and 40.0% from three-point range.
The Spartans never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 12 during the frame, going ahead 69-57 with 13:08 to play on a three by Frauenheim. However, the Violets slowly chipped away at the lead and pulled even at 90-90 with 44 seconds left to play in the game. Prendergast fouled on the next CWRU possession and hit both ends of the one-and-one to give CWRU the lead back. NYU had a final chance to tie the game, but junior forward Ian Elam blocked a layup by Quinn Clark with 12 seconds left to keep the lead intact, and Rashid collected the rebound and was fouled immediately. He hit both free throws to extend CWRU's lead to 94-90, and following an NYU basket, Prendergast was fouled and connected on two more free throws to secure the 96-92 win.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 60.3% (35-58) overall, 47.6% (10-21) from three-point range, and 88.9% (16-18) from the free throw line.
CWRU will play its final two home games of the 2022-23 regular season next weekend, welcoming 15th-ranked Rochester to Horsburgh Gymnasium on Friday night and 20th-ranked Emory on Sunday morning. Friday night will also mark 'Senior Day' for the Spartans, who will recognize their five graduating players – graduate students Prendergast and Frauenheim, and seniors Frilling, Josh Levy, and Jason Lewis – prior to the start of the game.
