#7 John Carroll downs Marietta 89-75

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — No. 7 ranked John Carroll University defeated Marietta College by the score of 89-75 Saturday (Feb. 4) afternoon in men's basketball action. The Pioneers slip to 13-8 overall and 8-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Blue Streaks improve to 19-2 overall and 13-1 in the OAC.
 
The first half was a back-and-forth affair as neither team led by more than eight points. There were 12 lead changes and four ties in the first 20 minutes. David Sanford drained a long three-pointer as time expired to cut the John Carroll advantage to five points, 44-39, at halftime.
 
John Carroll got a layup from Will Yontek at the 14:31 mark of the second half giving the Blue Streaks a 10-point lead, 59-49, for the first time in the game. The JCU lead expanded to 18 points midway through the period.
 
A jumper from Eric Hanna gave John Carroll its biggest lead of the game, 88-65, with 2:36 left on the clock. The Pioneers finished the game on a 10-1 run for the final 89-75 score. Jake Singleton scored eight of the 10 Marietta points during the final minutes.
 
Sanford led the Pioneers with 15 points. Cooper Parrott chipped in with 14 points, while Singleton finished with 10 points. Sahmi Willoughby grabbed a team-high six rebounds to go along with six points.
 
Luke Frazier scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Blue Streaks. Henry Raynor notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. Luke Chicone added 15 points, while Jerry Higgins and Yontek had 12 and 10 points, respectively.
 
Marietta returns home to host No. 5 ranked Mount Union on Wednesday (Feb. 8). Tip-off in ban Johnson Arena is set for 7:00 p.m.
