HAVERFORD, PA – The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team held off an upset-minded Haverford squad 59-56 Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.
The Blue Jays have now won eight straight and 12 of their last 13 to improve 18-3 overall and 12-2 in the conference. The Fords fall to 7-14 on the season and 5-9 in the Centennial.
Ryan Trotter scored on a putback with just 28.6 ticks on the clock to pull Haverford within one. After trading turnovers, graduate student Jayden Nixon made one of two free throws to double the lead with 16 seconds to go. Trotter then missed on the ensuing possession and Nixon was fouled on the rebound. He again went one-for-two and it was a three-point game with 10 seconds left. Trotter sliced the lead back to one with a pair of free throws on the other end. Graduate student Tom Quarry then sealed the win with two from the line with 4.3 seconds to play.
This was a close one over the first 10 minutes and Haverford led 15-14 on a Nicholas Stewart layup. Sophomore John Windley answered with a three-pointer to spark a 14-0 run. Senior Lincoln Yeutter and sophomore Brian Johansson capped the run with back-to-back triples and Hopkins led 28-15 with 5:29 left in the first. Nate Torres halted the run with a layup and kick-started a 10-0 run that saw the Fords pull within three just three minutes later.
Quarry and junior Will Sykes made a free throw apiece, followed by another Johansson three-pointer and the Blue Jays took a 33-25 lead into the half. Torres opened the second-half scoring with bucket in the paint, but layups from Windley and Quarry put JHU up 37-27. Haverford put together another 10-0 run and tied the game on a Brandon Banadda three-pointer at 13:43.
The teams then traded scores over the next seven and a half minutes and Haverford led 48-46. The Blue Jays responded with an 8-2 spurt to take a 54-50 lead with 3:06 on the clock. A fall-away jumper by Trotter on the other end made it a one-score game once again. Sykes made it a three-point game with a free throw, but another Trotter bucket sliced the lead to just one with and set up the late Blue Jay free throws to secure the win.
Windley led the Blue Jays with 16 points, while Quarry added 10 points, three assists and two steals. Nixon had a game-high seven rebounds to go with six points. While Yeutter added nine points and a pair of steals. Torres led all scorers with 24 points and had a team-best six boards. Trotter chipped in 10 points, to go with six assists.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, February 7 as the Blue Jays visit Franklin & Marshall. Tip-off at the Mayser Center is slated for 8:00 pm.
Notes: Quarry moved past Michael Gardner and into 13th place in school history with 1,134 career points. He needs 47 points to tie Frank Grzywacz for 12th all-time.
