BEREA, Ohio — Baldwin Wallace's last second three-pointer was off the mark as Marietta College held on to defeat the Yellow Jackets 86-84 Saturday (Jan. 28) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 12-7 on the season and 7-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Baldwin Wallace slips to 9-10 overall and 5-7 in conference games.
"We feel fortunate to get out of Berea with the win. Give BW credit, they played extremely well offensively and made us pay when we broke down on defense," Marietta head coach Jon VanderWal said. "With that being said, our guys stepped up and made the plays down the stretch. It was a great road win."
Cooper Parrott and David Sanford each made three three-pointers and finished with 19 points to lead the Pioneers. Jac Alexander scored 17 points, while Lovenson Xavier chipped in with 14 points and five rebounds.
Baldwin Wallace's Ashton Price drained four three-pointers and led all scorers with 24 points. Jarred Logan scored 13 points and pulled down six boards. Jake Snyder and Zoltan Nagy added 12 points each, while Jackson Simmons just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Anthony Mazzeo chipped in with 10 points.
Price hit a three-pointer to open the game's scoring as Baldwin Wallace jumped out to an early 13-5 lead forcing a Pioneer timeout. Marietta responded with a 10-2 run tying the game at 15-15. A buzzer beating three-pointer from Alexander gave Marietta a 42-38 lead at halftime.
Marietta opened the second half with a layup from Parrott and a triple from Xavier pushing the lead to nine points, 47-38. It would be the Pioneers' biggest lead of the afternoon. The Yellow Jackets battled back to tie the game at 48 and again at 50 before Marietta took the lead for good on a Sanford layup with 13:31 left on the clock.
The Pioneers couldn't shake Baldwin Wallace as the Yellow Jackets got a pair of three-pointers from Price and another from Snyder down the stretch. Price's final triple of the game cut the Marietta lead to one, 85-84, with 22 seconds left on the clock.
Baldwin Wallace was forced to foul and sent Alexander to the line for to free throws with 19 ticks on the clock. Alexander missed the first and hit the second for an 86-84 Pioneer lead.
The Yellow Jackets struggled to get into their offense against Marietta's stifling halfcourt defense. Snyder was forced to put up a desperation three-pointer that failed to hit iron as time expired.
Marietta travels to New Concord on Wednesday (Feb. 1) to take on Muskingum University. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
