Lubin Scores Career-High 31 Points as Cortland Defeats Plattsburgh, 89-71

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) scored 27 of his career-high 31 points in the second half as Cortland pulled away for an 89-71 victory over visiting Plattsburgh in SUNYAC men's basketball action.
 
Cortland upped its record to 14-6 overall and remained in fourth place in the SUNYAC standings with a 9-4 record. Cortland will host third-place Oneonta on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and fifth-place New Paltz Saturday at 4 p.m.
 
Lubin finished 11-of-18 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range. He also grabbed four rebounds and shared the team lead with four assists. Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) ended with 14 points, five assists and three blocks, Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) made 3-of-5 treys and finished with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists, and Cam Williams (Rome/Rome Free Academy) scored 10 points and handed out three assists.
 
Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) added six points, two blocks and a career-high 10 rebounds. Isaiah Preston (Penfield) tallied seven points on 3-of-4 shooting and Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea) also hit 3-of-4 shots and finished with six points and four assists.
 
Plattsburgh (7-12, 3-9 SUNYAC) was led by Kevin Tabb with 14 points. Sheriff Conteh scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting, Franklin Infante recorded 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals, and Myles Jones netted 10 points.
 
Cortland shot 64 percent in the first half compared to Plattsburgh's 35 percent shooting, but the Red Dragons led by just four, 44-40, at the break as the Cardinals tallied eight second-chance points and held a 9-1 scoring edge on the foul line during the half. The guests were within five, 54-49, with 15:19 left in the second half before Cortland went on a 9-0 run that featured four points from Lubin and a Preston 3-pointer.
 
Cortland held a 68-53 lead with 11:16 left following a Lubin layup. Plattsburgh scored the next six to pull within nine, but a Linehan 3-point play and a Coston jumper re-established a 14-point lead for the Red Dragons with 7:54 left. Plattsburgh got back to within nine once more with 3:59 remaining but Cortland finished the game on a 12-3 run. Lubin scored eight of those points, capped by a jumper with 26 seconds left to push him over the 30-point mark. Lubin's previous career high was 23 points in a win at Plattsburgh this past December.
 
Cortland finished the game with a season-best 56 percent field goal percentage, and the Red Dragons' 13 3-pointers also were a season best. Cortland connected on 13-of-21 treys (62 percent). Plattsburgh shot 35 percent overall and 31 percent (10-of-32) from deep.
