SALEM, Va. -- Junior Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) posted his fifth-straight double-double with a game-high 14 points, adding 10 rebounds, to lead 25th-ranked Hampden-Sydney College to a hard-fought 57-51 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball road win at Roanoke College on Saturday evening in Salem. Senior Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) and junior Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) each contributed nine points for the visiting Tigers (16-4, 10-1 ODAC), who led 29-21 at halftime and made 8-10 free throws over the final 1:35 for their seventh-straight win and their 14th win in the last 15 games. Efosa U-Edosomwan had a double-double with a game-high of 14 points, adding 11 rebounds for the host Maroons (15-5, 8-3 ODAC), who had battled back to tie the closely-played contest at 49-49 with 1:52 remaining.

"Grit is part of our TIGER DNA," said fourth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "Our guys showed tremendous grit tonight against a really good team on the road. There were many points in the game where we could have folded or lost our enthusiasm, and we didn't. This is a special group."

H-SC, ranked 25th in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25, opened the contest with a three-point field goal by Clements at 19:30, and a three-pointer from Hubbard made it 6-2 at 18:21. RC, getting votes in this week's national poll, tied it at 8-8 with 16:08 on the clock, but the Tigers responded with a quick 12-0 run fueled by the bench to lead 20-8 at 11:30—their largest lead of the contest. Sophomore Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) sparked the outburst with two three-pointers, while senior Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) added his own three-pointer and sophomore Nick Shryock (Davidson, NC) added an offensive rebound and put-back basket. The Maroons answered back with a 9-0 run to close to within 20-17 at 7:04, and it was still a three-point game at 22-19 with 5:31 left, before the Garnet & Grey closed the half with a 7-2 run to lead 29-21 at the intermission—getting four late points from junior Josiah Hardy (Ashburn).

RC scored the first five points of the second half to close to within 29-26 at 17:35, before H-SC finally scored at 14:21 via a three-pointer by Clements to make it 32-26. The Maroons were within 32-30 at 12:37, but a three-pointer from Shryock and a drive to the basket by junior Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) pushed the margin to 37-30 with 10:27 remaining—the largest lead of the second half for the visitors. The hosts used a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 40-39 with 7:18 left, and the home team led 45-44 at 3:17. The Tigers led 47-45 at 2:53 after a three-pointer from Hubbard, and were ahead 49-47 at 2:12 following a baseline jumper by Hubbard. RC tied it at 49-49 with 1:52 on the clock, but the Garnet & Grey secured their road triumph with 8-10 free throws over the final 1:35 … including 3-4 each by Clements and Hubbard, and 2-2 from Hardy.

Hubbard led H-SC with his fifth-straight double-double of a game-high 14 points, adding 10 rebounds. Clements and Brazil each finished with nine points for the Tigers, with Brazil adding a game-high four steals. McGowan contributed his seven points off the bench, adding three rebounds. Hardy had six points, while Shryock added five points, a career-high six rebounds and two assists in 12 minutes off the bench. H-SC shot 31% (19-62) from the field, including 39% (9-23) on three-pointers, and 71% (10-14) at the free throw line.

Edosomwan led RC with his double-double of a game-high 14 points, adding 11 rebounds. Kasey Draper had 12 points for the Maroons, while Justin Kuthan contributed a double-double of 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. RC shot 39% (22-57) from the field, including just 10% (2-21) on three-pointers, and 42% (5-12) at the line.

H-SC will remain on the road at ODAC member Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday, February 1, at 7 p.m. in Virginia Beach.
