CWRU Tops Brandeis 91-71 Behind Hot Shooting Night

The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team connected on 15 three-point shots on Friday night en route to a 91-71 win at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.

The Spartans improved to 3-3 in University Athletic Association play and to 13-3 overall following Friday night's win. Brandeis dropped to 11-6 overall and to 3-3 in conference games.

Four Spartans finished in double figures on Friday, led by senior forward Cole Frilling, who scored 19 points on an eight-of-14 shooting effort, including three-of-five from long range, and added nine rebounds. Graduate student guard Mitch Prendergast and sophomore forward Umar Rashid each scored 17 points, and sophomore guard Sam Trunley added 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists, with all three hitting three three-point tries. Graduate student guard Danny Frauenheim added seven points and dished out 10 assists, his second effort of 10 or more assists this season.

As a team, the Spartans connected on 15-of-22 three-point attempts during the game for a 68.2% mark, the second-highest percentage in a game where the team attempted at least 10 three-pointers in program history. CWRU shot 61.0% (36-of-59) overall, the highest in a game by the team this season.

In addition to the shooting performance, the Spartans moved the ball well on Friday night, totaling 20 assists compared to 10 for the Judges. CWRU also outrebounded Brandeis 33-18 during the game.

The Spartans led by as many as 20 points during the opening half behind a blistering-hot shooting effort over the first 20 minutes. CWRU converted nine of its 12 three-point tries (75.0%) and shot 64.5% overall during the first period with six different players knocking down at least one long-range attempt. With the Spartans leading by two, 25-23, and 10:08 remaining in the opening half, CWRU launched on a 24-6 run, taking a 49-29 lead with 2:59 on the clock on a three by Trunley. The Spartans went six-for-seven on three-point attempts during the run. Brandeis trimmed into the Spartans' lead by halftime, cutting the advantage to 14 points, 51-37, heading into the second half.

The Spartans maintained a double-digit lead the entire second half. The Judges trimmed the lead down to 10, 56-46, with 16:54 left in the game, but CWRU went on to build its lead to a game-high 24 points with 7:16 left in the game when a layup by junior guard Daniel Florey put the Spartans ahead 81-57.

The Spartans will look to complete the sweep of the UAA road weekend when the team travels to face NYU in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
