More news about: Coast Guard

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Yesterday, the Coast Guard Bears hit the road to face off against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Goats. Unfortunately, for the CGA Men's Basketball Team, they would not be able to stop WPI's offense and would lose, 77-49. With this defeat, Coast Guard moves to (2-5) in NEWMAC play, while WPI stays undefeated in conference, moving to a (7-0) record.

Despite WPI getting on the board first to start the game, CGA would comeback and tie the score up 6-6 in the first five minutes of play. The Bears would tie up the score twice more in the first half, but would fail to stop the Goats offensively. Heading into halftime the Bears would trail by 22 points.

Sophomore guard Declan Rooney would lead his team with 12 points, followed by forward Luke Farrell who would end the night with 10 points and seven boards. Freshman Trevor Parks tallied nine points and picked up five boads, and center Bryce VanderWiere added eight.

WPI would outshoot CGA from beyond the arc, shooting (26.1%) compared to a Bears three-point percentage of (19%). The Bears would also be out shot in field goal percentage as well, shooting (28.3%) to a Goats (48.4%). However, CGA would outshoot WPI from the free throw line, going 15-20, (75%), to WPI shooting 9-15, (60%).

Coast Guard would have a small surge in the beginning of the second half, but it would not be enough to stop WPI from outscoring them. Ultimately the Bears would fall, 77-49.

Both teams will be back in action this Saturday. CGA will look to redeem themselves at 11 AM at Wheaton(Mass.) and WPI will tip off at Springfield at 3 PM.
