JERSEY CITY, N.J. – In a down-to-the-wire New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game, the William Paterson men's basketball team (9-10, 3-9 NJAC) was unable to generate a last-second shot and fell to New Jersey City (9-10, 4-8 NJAC), 69-67 on Jan. 25.


HOW IT HAPPENED:

• The Pioneers found themselves trailing by one (58-57) with 6:09 remaining in the game before outscoring the Gothic Knights, 5-0, during a stretch of just over two minutes. However, New Jersey City countered with 10 unanswered points to grab a four-point advantage (67-64) with 24 seconds on the clock.
• Junior Tyreek Montgomery then took the ball coast-to-coast for a layup to trim the deficit to two before New Jersey City went to the foul line and knocked down just one of two foul shots.
• On the ensuing William Paterson possession, Montgomery was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer, but was only able to knock down the first of three shots. Despite the ball going off a New Jersey City player and out of bounds on the final miss, the Pioneers were unable to get a shot off before time expired and the Gothic Knights earned the win.

 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Junior Shawn Summers Jr. paced the Pioneers with 25 points on 9-of-16 (.562) shooting from the field with three makes from deep on four tries.
• It was the fifth 20-point performance of his career.
• Montgomery logged 15 points, a team-best nine rebounds and five assists.
• Sophomores Neftali Valentin and David Martinez each recorded 10 points.
