The Hope College men's basketball team stuck with a determination to be defensive and returned to its winning ways at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The Flying Dutchmen earned a 74-60 victory against visiting Adrian College on Wednesday by holding their opponent to their fewest points in the last nine meetings.

Hope (9-7 overall, 3-2 MIAA) snapped a rare three-game losing streak on its home court to remain tied for third place in the MIAA standings with Olivet College.

"Probably for 36, 37 minutes, our team defense was outstanding," head coach Greg Mitchell said. "We guarded the ball so much better and longer."

The 60 points allowed marked the best defensive effort of the season for the Flying Dutchmen.

Adrian (3-12, 1-4 MIAA) shot 39.1 percent from the floor (25-64) and 22.2 percent from 3-point range (3-18).

Hope took control of the game midway through the first half with a 10-0 run over a span of nearly three minutes. that resulted in a 21-11 lead. Adrian never pulled back closer than five points.

Senior forward Evan Thomas (Okemos, Michigan / Okemos HS) topped the Flying Dutchmen with a game-high 19 points. Thomas, who also grabbed nine rebounds, went 8-of-11 from the foul line.

Senior forward TJ McKenzie Jr. (North Muskegon, Michigan / North Muskegon) chipped in 15 points off the bench.

Freshman guard Marcus Wourman (East Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing) added 12 points.

Sophomore forward Ben Wagar (Harbor Springs, Michigan / Petoskey) buried three 3-pointers and netted nine points.

Sophomore center Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) collected a game-high 12 rebounds and eight points.

"We hit some big shots," Mitchell said. "We found nine 3s, which is always a big deal. ET gets to the line double digits; that's a good sign (because) he's in aggressive mode. That makes teams pay. I loved how Ben played again, shooting the ball really well. I thought Marcus was fantastic. TJ had a really good stretch, too."
