Rose-Hulman pulls away in second half to take down Yellow Jackets

The Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers used a dominant second half to run away from the Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon and win, 77-57.

The Basics:

Inside The Numbers:

  • Max Chaplin led all scorers with 26 points.

  • Landen Swanner led Defiance with 15 points and six assists.

  • Te Jones scored 13 points.

  • Marell Jordan finished with 12 points, two blocks, and four assists.

  • Evan Conrad scored six points and pulled down a team high five rebounds.

  • There were 10 ties and 14 lead changes in the contest.

First Half:

  • The Yellow Jackets started the game strong with a 7-0 run that was sparked by two layups from Evan Conrad and a three from Landen Swanner.

  • The lead swelled to 13-3 sparked by two more Landen Swanner makes from downtown and that forced Rose-Hulman to take an early timeout.

  • Te Jones knocked down a three to give Defiance a 21-10 lead with 11:37 remaining in the half. From that point on, it was all Rose-Hulman as the Fightin' Engineers outscored the Yellow Jackets 28-14 in the remainder of the half to take a 38-35 halftime lead. 

Second Half:

  • A layup from Landen Swanner tied the game at 41 with 17:34 remaining. 

  • Max Chaplin knocked down a three to give the Fightin' Engineers a 44-41 lead with 17:10 remaining and Rose-Hulman would slowly pull away and lead the rest of the way.

  • A jump shot from Cam Martin cut the lead down to two with 13:50 left and that would be as close as the Yellow Jackets would get. 

  • Rose-Hulman used a 13-0 run to take a 20-point lead with 4:03 remaining that was capped by two free throws from Miles McGowen. The 20-point lead would be the largest of the game and the final difference in the contest.
