Strong Second Half Fuels Hopkins 64-45 Win at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, MD – The 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team dominated host McDaniel in the second half en route to a 64-45 win Thursday night in Centennial Conference action. It is the 100th win at Johns Hopkins for head coach Josh Loeffler.
 
McDaniel jumped out to an early 23-7 lead, on the strength of shooting nearly 60 percent from the field, with 7:09 to play in the half. Sophomore Brian Johansson scored on a put-back 36 seconds later to spark an 11-0 run that saw the Blue Jays pulled within five at 2:45. Graduate student Tom Quarry capped the run with a three-pointer and a jumper in the paint to make it a 23-18 game.
 
David Smoot hit a triple to end the run and push the Green Terror's lead back to eight with 2:14 to play. Quarry answered with a lay-up in the final bucket of the half and McDaniel led 26-20 at the break. The teams traded buckets over the first three minutes and 18 seconds of the half and the Terror led 30-24.
 
Senior Carson James then nailed a jumper to ignite a quick 7-0 spurt. Junior Will Sykes punctuated the run and gave the Blue Jays their first lead of the game at 31-30. Lorin Hall answered with back-to-back buckets to put McDaniel up 34-31 with 14:06 on the clock. James and Jahdel Darego traded scores before a Quarry triple kick-started a 15-3 run that saw Hopkins go up 48-39 at 6:48.
 
Jonas Sujeta then sandwiched jumpers around a Johansson three-pointer and it was 51-43 just 64 seconds later. Quarry then made two of two shots from the line to spark another Blue Jay run. Five Blue Jays scored during the run that saw them outscore the Terror 13-2 over the final five and a half minutes.
 
 Quarry led all scorers with 18 points while Johansson scored a career-high 16 points to go with five rebounds. Senior Sidney Thybulle matched Johansson with a team-high five rebounds and had a pair of blocks. Sujeta was the only Green Terror in double figures with 17 points. Charles Contee added seven points, five rebounds and a game-high five assists.
 
JHU outscored McDaniel 57-22 over the final 27 minutes of the game. The Blue Jays went 22-of-34 (.647) from the field during that stretch, while holding the Green Terror to 10-of-35 (.286) shooting.
 
Notes: Head coach Josh Loeffler improves to 100-25 (.800) in his four-plus seasons with the Blue Jays. For his career, he is now 146-38 (.793) • Thybulle now ranks 16th in program history with 56 career blocks.
