The 21st-ranked Guilford College men's basketball team faced the University of Lynchburg in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference showdown. After a tightly contested first half, the Quakers defeated the Hornets, 75-59.
Leading the way for Guilford (12-3, 5-1) was Tyler Dearman with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Jorden Davis was right behind his fellow senior with 19 points, going 7-10 from the free throw line.
In the first half, the Quakers jumped out to a 4-0 advantage but Lynchburg (4-11, 1-5) responded and tied the game up. GC answered with a 7-0 including a breakaway dunk by Dearman as his team led 11-4 at the 14:08 mark.
The Hornets cut the deficit back to one (11-10) but then Myles Washington scored seven-straight and forced a visitor timeout as GC led 18-10 with 11:48 on the clock.
From there, Guilford maintained the lead until Lynchburg rattled off 11-consecutive points to lead by three (26-23). Trailing for the first time in the game, Davis hit four free throws consecutively to put the home squad up 27-26 with 5:13 in the half.
Lynchburg recaptured the lead but the Quakers went on a 12-0 run led by Dearman with seven points. GC held a nine-point edge (39-30) as both teams headed for their respective locker rooms.
In the second half, Guilford held serve and even expanded its lead to 19 (58-39) with 12:02 remaining in regulation. The Hornets slowly chipped away at the deficit but the closest they got was within 10 (59-49). The Quakers held on and won by the 16-point margin.
Washington was the other Quaker in double-digit points with 16 on the evening. Defensively, GC forced 21 turnovers and scored 25 points of them. As a team, the hosts shot 42.1% (24-57) from the field and made 10 three-point shots on the night.
Guilford hosts Averett University on Saturday, January 14 on Jack Jensen Court. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
