Brockport Men Hand Cortland First SUNYAC Loss

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Brockport outscored Cortland by a 29-3 margin over an 11-minute span between the end of the first half and start of the second half to break open a close game and the Golden Eagles handed the Red Dragons their first SUNYAC loss, 86-62, in men's basketball action at Corey Gymnasium. 
 
Brockport improved to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in the conference, while Cortland fell to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the league. Cortland still leads the SUNYAC with its 7-1 league record, a half game better than Brockport and Oswego (6-1 each) and a game better than New Paltz and Oneonta (5-1 each). Cortland hosts Oswego Friday at 7:30 p.m. 
 
Mekhi Beckett led Brockport with 27 points, 21 in the second half. He hit 5-of-8 3-pointers and was 11-of-17 overall, and he paced the Golden Eagles with eight rebounds. Jahidi Wallace scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and Monte Johnson scored 15 points on a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor. 
 
Cortland was led by Cam Williams (Rome/Rome Free Academy) with 15 points, 13 in the first half. He also totaled four rebounds and three assists Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks and Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea) ended with nine points. Humberto Cabrera (Millbrook) dished out a game-high five assists. 
 
Brockport shot 48 percent from the field overall and 37 percent (7-of-19) from the arc. Cortland ended at 35 percent overall, with just a 26 percent mark in the second half, and was 22 percent from 3-point range (6-of-27). 
 
Brockport led 27-19 with 8:54 left in the first half, but Cortland came back and took the lead, 37-36, on a Williams 3-pointer with 4:03 left. The Red Dragons' largest lead was 39-36 on two Grunder foul shots with 3:11 left, but the Golden Eagles finished the half on baskets by Tony Arnold, Johnson and Beckett to lead 42-39 at halftime. 
 
Cortland was still within five, 47-42, on a Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) 3-pointer with 18:15 remaining, but Brockport scored the game's next 18 points to take a 65-42 lead with 11:51 left. Beckett made three 3-pointers during that run. Cortland briefly got back to within 19 points at the 10:32 mark but got no closer the rest of the way.
