ROCHESTER, NY - Consistent scoring from Nazareth College led to a 72-50 win over the Alfred University men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon from the Kidera Gymnasium.

Mike Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean) led Alfred University (5-3, 1-1 Empire 8) with a team-high 12 points to go with two rebounds and two assists. Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY/Ellicotville) finished with six points and 10 rebounds. Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) added nine points for AU.

"A lot of credit to Nazareth," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "They did a great job today, and we didn't do enough to make it difficult for them."

The Golden Flyers (6-1, 2-0 Empire 8) got off to a quick start in the first half, putting together an opening 7-0 run across the first two minutes of action. A three-point shot from Darren Miller (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) was followed by an open layup from Marshall to cut the deficit to one point. Nazareth piled on an additional six points to have Alfred University trailing by as many as seven points midway through the first half. Each side continued to trade successful shots before the Golden Flyers entered the break with a 29-24 lead.

Bowen opened scoring for the Saxons in the second half, recording the team's first four points. A three-point shot from Marshall had AU trailing by three points with over 14 minutes remaining. The Golden Flyers responded with a 16-3 run to extend their lead with four minutes left. The Saxons were limited to just two points in the final three minutes of action before the final horn ended the game.

"We know we have a lot of work to do and we're excited to get back to practice after a day off tomorrow," Kaempffe said.

Alfred University will next return home to host Houghton University on Wednesday with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 PM.
