Quarry Nets 1000th Career Point as Hopkins Bests Haverford, 75-45

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins men's basketball graduate student Tom Quarry scored his 1,000th point in a 75-45 win over visiting Haverford Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.
 
Trailing 2-0 early, senior Carson James drained a pull-up jumper to ignite a 14-0 run that spanned four minutes. Graduate student Jayden Nixon capped the run with a free throw to stake the Blue Jays to a 14-2 lead a the 13:34-mark. The teams traded buckets over the ensuing six minutes, and it was 20-8 Hopkins.
 
JHU responded with seven straight points to push its lead to 19 with 4:35 to play in the half. The Blue Jays and the Fords went back to trading scores over the final four minutes and Hopkins took a 35-17 lead into the lockerroom.
 
Quarry hit from downtown to open the second-half scoring and the Blue Jays' lead swelled to 21. The lead see-sawed up and down over the next eight minutes and it was 49-27 Hopkins. A Ryan Trotter layup, followed by a Charlie Mamlin three trimmed the deficit to 17 with 11:12 to play. JHU answered with a Sidney Thybulle layup and three points from Nixon to push the lead to 54-32.
 
Mamlin hit another triple for the Fords, but a pair of Carson James free throws sparked a 15-4 run. Six different Blue Jays scored during the run, which was capped by a Colin Crothers' hook shot that put Hopkins up 69-39 with 3:12 to play. The teams traded baskets over the final three minutes and the Blue Jays took the 75-45 win.
 
James led all scorers with 20 points, going 7-of-11 from the field. Quarry added 15 points to go with five rebounds. His 1000th point came, appropriately, on a three-pointer with 51.9 seconds remaining. Nixon also finished in double figures with 11 points and a game-high eight boards. Mamlin led the Fords with eight points.
 
Hopkins hits the road on Tuesday, January 10 to take on 17th-ranked Swarthmore. Tip-off at Tarble Pavilion is slated for 8:00 pm.
