Hood falls at home to Widener

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College men's basketball fell to a hot-shooting Widener team, led by Dominic Dunn's 33 points, 94-81 in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Trumaine Strickland (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) scored a team-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and hit all three of his 3-point attempts. 
  • Garrison Linton (New Market, Md./Oakdale) went 4-for-8 to score 13 points. The sophomore also blocked two shots. 
  • Jevon Yarbrough (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) came off the bench for a career-high 12 points on 3-of-5 from the floor. 

How it Happened

  • Hood shot 63 percent in the first half but still trailed 51-46 at halftime. Widener, led by 15 points from Dunn, hit 12 3-pointers in the first half. 
  • An and-one by Will Pataki (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) gave Hood a 32-30 lead with 5:48 left in the first half before the Pride hit four 3-point shots over the next four minutes to fuel a 16-6 that gave Widener a 46-38 advantage. 
  • In the early minutes of the second half, Hood fought back and tied the game on two occasions, including when Jared Young (York, Pa./Episcopal (Va.)) found Jack Fricka (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) for an open layup to make it 53-53 at the 16:48 mark. 
  • A Kenny Lewis layup at the other end started an 18-2 Widener run, resulting in a 71-55 deficit for the Blazers with 11:18 left. 
  • Dunn, who finished with a game-high 33 points, scored 12 in the final 10 minutes as Hood was unable to get closer than 10 points the rest of the way. 

Analysis

  • While the Blazers connected on 36 percent from behind the 3-point line (11-of-31), Widener caught fire. The Pride went 19-for-35 from 3-point range (54 percent). 
  • Hood's bench outscored Widener's reserves 29-14. 

For the Opponent

  • Dunn scored his 1,000th point in the contest. He went 10-for-14 from the 3-point line in the game, and added eight rebounds, five assists and two steals to his afternoon. 
  • Pat Holden (14), Kevin Schenk (12), Lewis (11) and Steven Matlack (10) also reached double figures in scoring for the Pride. 

Notes

  • Hood dropped to 7-7 overall and 2-4 in the MAC Commonwealth. 
  • Widener improved to 8-4 and 3-2.
