Trinity Men's Basketball Wins Holiday Invitational Final Over Farmingdale State

HARTFORD, Conn. - The host Bantams captured the 2022 Trinity College Men's Basketball Holiday Invitational title with a 68-65 victory over the Farmingdale State College Rams on Ogrodnik Court in Oosting Gymnasium this afternoon.  Trinity, which downed the Framingham State Rams in the first round yesterday, improves to 11-1 for the first time since 2006-07, while Farmingdale State is now 8-4 with today's loss and a 78-65 win against the Endicott College Gulls in the first round.  In the consolation game, the Gulls defeated Framingham State, 85-65.  Drew Brown represented Endicott, now 7-3, on the all-tournament team and Bryan Thompson made it for the 3-10 Framingham State Rams.  Nick Hurowitz scored 24 points and nine rebounds and made the all-tournament team for Farmingdale State, while senior captains C.J. Redd (Peekskill, N.Y.) and Dana Smith (Providence, R.I.) represented the champion Bantams.  Trinity will open New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play on Friday, January 6 at 7 p.m. on the road against Colby College.

Trinity trailed, 38-34, at the half and by seven points in the second stanza but went ahead by five points at 68-63 on back-to-back long three-pointers by sophomore guard Will Dorion (Needham, Mass.) and rookie Henry Vetter (Kenilworth, Ill.) in the final 90 seconds.  Farmingdale cut its deficit to three points on a pair of free throws by Zamere McKenzie and had a chance to tie at the end but Trinity first-year Jarrel Okorougo (Stoneham, Mass.) blocked a three-point try in the final seconds.  Vetter came off the bench to lead the Bantams in scoring with 18 points, while Redd had 14 points, and Smith totaled 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds,  The Bantams dominated the glass with a 45-to-33 rebounding advantage and received 39 points from its reserves to offset eight missed free throws in 15 attempts.

Farmingdale State opened up an 11-6 lead early after a Hurowitz put-back but Trinity clawed its way back and tied it at 22-all on a layup by Redd with 7:22 remaining in the first half.  Dorion tied the game again at 34-34 with a jumper at the two-minute mark, before Hurowitz and Macai John scored the last four points before intermission.  Hurowitz gave the Rams a 47-40 lead with a three-pointer 4:29 into the second half, but a layup by senior captain Joe Hoch (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) and two Vetter free throws gave the Bantams their first lead at 48-47 at the 14-minute mark.  The teams traded leads multiple times over the next 10 minutes and the Rams led for the last time at 63-62 on two foul shots by Tre Riggins with 3:58 on the clock.  Dorion drilled the go-ahead triple from deep on the right wing.
