The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team wrapped up the 2022 portion of its schedule with a big road win on Wednesday night, defeating Denison University 74-49 at Livingston Gym in Granville, Ohio.

It was the third-straight win for the Spartans, who improved to 8-2 overall, marking just the third time in program history that the team has won at least eight of its first 10 games, and the first time since opening the 2009-10 campaign with a 9-1 record. Denison dropped to 4-5 following the loss.

Senior guard/forward Isabella Mills scored 24 points and collected nine rebounds to lead all Spartan players in the win. She shot eight-of-14 from the floor, including five-of-nine from three-point range, while adding two steals and a block. First-year guard/forward Emily Plachta added 17 points on five-of-eight shooting overall, including four-of-seven from behind the three-point line, while junior forward Kayla Characklis finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Junior guard Margaret Terry finished with six points and a career-high nine assists, one assist shy of the school single-game record and the most by a Spartan since Alicia Gonzales dished out a program-best 10 helpers against Chatham on January 2, 2020.

Although the Spartans never trailed in the game, it was played close throughout the first half. CWRU opened the game on a 6-0 run and led by as many as eight points in the opening quarter, going ahead 13-5 on a three-pointer by Terry with 5:07 left, but the score was tied at 16-16 at the end of the first stanza. The Spartans continued to hold a narrow lead through most of the second quarter and took a 33-28 lead into halftime when a steal by Characklis set up a three-pointer by junior guard Sarah Mitchell with 38 seconds left.

A big third quarter helped CWRU put some distance between themselves and the Big Red. The Spartans started the period on a 21-3 run, led by Mills, who scored 10 points during the stretch and put CWRU ahead 54-30 with a three with 5:03 to go in the third. CWRU led by as many as 28 points in the game, taking a 74-46 advantage with 3:58 remaining in the fourth period, en route to the win.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 45.6% overall and 44.0% from three-point range while holding Denison to just 33.9% shooting overall and 15.4% from long range. The Spartans 11 made three-pointers in the game were their second-highest total this season.

Wednesday's game marked the final contest of 2022 for the Spartans, who will be off for the next three and a half weeks for finals and winter break. CWRU will be back in action right at the start of the new year, hosting Hilbert College at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 1.
