NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University men's basketball team had its five-game winning streak in Skyline play snapped on Saturday night, as the Maccabees fell to the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's University Long Island, 73-62, at Max Stern Athletic Center.

The Maccabees (8-5, 6-2 Skyline) had a 52-50 advantage with 11:27 to go in the game, but the Golden Eagles (3-5, 1-1 Skyline) took over the contest with 15 unanswered points in a span of 5:40 to take a commanding 65-52 hold with just 5:11 left to play. The Maccabees could not get back into the game from that point.

The key to the evening was the shooting from beyond the arc. St. Joseph's Long Island hit 42.9% (6-for-14) of its 3-point shot attempts, while Yeshiva only converted 19.2% (5-for-26) of its shots from downtown. The Golden Eagles had an efficient shooting night in general, tallying 52.8% (28-for-53) of their opportunities from the floor.

Leading the way for Yeshiva was sophomore guard Max Zakheim who scored 23 points, shooting 52.9% (9-for-17) from the field in the process, while grabbing four rebounds, distributing a pair of assists, and forcing two steals. Rookie guard Zevi Samet netted 18 points and snatched seven boards. Senior forward Matan Zucker had another productive game with 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Freshman forward Roy Itcovichi scored eight points, blocked a pair of shots, grabbed two caroms, dished out an assist, and collected a steal.

St. Joseph's Long Island built a seven-point benefit, at 34-27, with 3:03 to play in the opening half. The Maccabees got back on track as a pair of triples from Itcovichi shrunk the opposition's lead to 36-35 with 1:31 remaining. After Yeshiva forced a stop on the defensive side, Zucker grabbed an offensive rebound on the other end of the floor and provided a putback layup, while being bumped, that gave the Blue and White a 37-36 lead. He added the free throw to complete the traditional three-point play and increase YU's vantage to 38-36, with 37 ticks left on the clock.

The Golden Eagles tied the game up with 13 seconds left, thanks to a layup from junior forward Spencer Malloy. Both teams went into the half with the score tied at 38 points apiece.

The Maccabees got off to a good start in the second half, jumping out to a 45-42 benefit. After the Golden Eagles pulled to within one, Zakheim kicked it out to Samet who drained a triple to extend the Macs' advantage to 48-44 with 15:46 left to play in regulation time.

St. Joseph's scored the next four points to tie it up. After each team exchanged baskets to make it a 50-50 score, Zakheim converted a layup to put the Macs in front, 52-50, with 11:27 remaining.

From that point on, St, Joseph's Long Island took control of the contest by holding Yeshiva scoreless for the next 6:54. During that time, the visitors scored 15 straight points to surge to a 65-52 hold with just 5:11 left. Zakheim snapped YU's scoreless drought with a triple to pull the Macs to within 10 with 4:33 remaining. However, the Maccabees could not sustain any kind of a run to get back into the contest as the Golden Eagles went on to earn their first conference victory of the season.

St. Joseph's was led by junior guard Xavier Allen who scored a game-high 26 points, while forcing four steals and delivering three assists. Graduate forward Liam Sheehy led all players with 15 rebounds, while adding five points. Malloy produced 13 points and eight boards.

Yeshiva will continue its three-game homestand on Wednesday evening with a battle against Immaculata University. Tipoff at Max Stern Athletic Center is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
