WORCESTER -- John Lowther (Hingham, MA) notched 18 points to headline five WPI players in double figures in scoring as Engineers knocked off visiting Husson 76-49 on Wednesday evening to provide head coach Chris Bartley his 400th career win.
The Crimson and Gray, ranked 13th in the most recent D3hoops.com up their record to 6-1 on the season while the Eagles dip to 2-5 overall.
WPI was winless in the season before Bartley's arrival on Boynton Hill and after 12 wins his first two seasons, the Engineers posted 13-straight seasons of 20 or more victories. The 22-year head coach reached the milestone just seven games into his 21st season with contests as WPI did not play in 2020-21 due to the pandemic. Bartley is only the 30th active Division III coach to accomplish the feat and his winning percentage of .722 trails only Virginia Wesleyan's Dave Macedo as the highest among the 30.
The game began with both teams battling for the lead and featured a pair of ties and four lead changes in the early going, but a pair of John Adams (Douglas, MA) free throws 6:10 into the game put the hosts ahead for good at 11-10. The Engineers slowly extended their lead to 16 at the end of the half but saw Husson get back to within 13 with 12:23 to go but a 10-0 WPI run, punctuated by five straight from Donovan Sevilla (San Ramon, CA) to end the uprising and give the hosts the breathing room they needed.
Lowther drained 8-of-16 shots from the floor on his way to his game-high 18 points and added six rebounds. Adams achieved his second double-double of the season and 18th of his career with 10 points and 12 boards. Aidan Callahan (Rowley, MA) chipped in with 13 points and Sevilla and Andrew Lufkin (Auburn, NH) joined Adams with 10 points. Brett Marelli (Hampton, NH) equaled his season-best with nine points and J.R. Newman (Havertown, PA) stuffed the stat sheets with six rebounds, five assists, three steals and a pair of blocks, all career-highs for the rookie.
Jeremy Maronta (Brooklyn, NY) and Scott Lewis (South Portland, ME) were the scoring leaders for Husson, with 13 and 11 points respectively. Eric Ahlers (St. Pete, FL) crashed six boards and added seven points.
WPI shot 41.4% on the night with 36.% shooting from behind the arc. The Engineers rallied with 22 second chance points and added 36 points in the paint. Husson shot 40.5% during the game with 30.0% behind the 3-point line. The Eagles ended the night with 20 bench points and four blocks.
The Engineers are back at it on Saturday in their final contest before B term finals. WPI ventures to the Witch City for a noon matchup with Salem State. Husson continues a busy three-game week with the start of a two-game homestand on Friday at 6pm against New England College.
