Mallory Double-Double Paces #5 R-MC Men’s Hoops past EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Senior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti), the reigning ODAC Player of the Week, recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds as the fifth-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team outscored Eastern Mennonite 37-14 in the second half of a 75-48 ODAC victory on Wednesday evening.

How it Happened:

  • Senior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) hit a jumper to spark a 6-0 start for the Yellow Jackets. Mallory finished a layup to put R-MC up 12-6 before two treys by the Royals knotted the score at 12-12. Sophomore Vincent Payne (Frederick, Md./St. Maria Goretti) nailed a three-pointer as the Yellow Jackets reclaimed the lead at 15-12 with 12:20 left in the first half. EMU scored five straight points to take its first lead before buckets by Talbert and freshman Jabril Robinson (Derwood, Md./South Kent Prep) gave the visitors a 19-17 edge with 9:20 remaining. The Royals hit another trey to go up 20-19 before Talbert had five points in a 12-4 run as the Yellow Jackets took a 31-24 advantage with 5:45 left. A triple by Payne put R-MC on top 38-32 with 35 seconds remaining, but EMU would have the final basket of the half as the Yellow Jackets led 38-34 at the break. Mallory had 12 points and six rebounds, while Talbert added nine points and four assists.
  • Junior Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) scored twice in the paint to start the scoring and Robinson buried two treys as R-MC started the half on a 12-1 spurt to take a 50-35 lead with 15:45 remaining. Following a bucket by the Royals, Mallory converted a three-point play to push the lead to 16 at 53-37 with 14:25 left. Two more three-pointers by Robinson extended the advantage to 19 at 59-40 with 11:30 remaining. After a triple by EMU, Talbert had a layup to finish a 10-0 run as the lead grew to 69-43 with 7:30 left.  A layup by Talbert finished the scoring and gave R-MC its largest margin at the end of the 75-48 contest.

By The Numbers:

  • R-MC has won four straight against EMU.
  • The Yellow Jackets had three score in double figures. Along with 18 by Mallory, Robinson had a career-high 14 and Talbert added 13.
  • Mallory recorded one blocked shot. He has 206 career blocks, the most in program history.
  • Talbert finished with five assists and Mbangue handed out four to match his season high.
  • R-MC held EMU to 48 points, the lowest opponent total for the Yellow Jackets this season. It was the third time R-MC held a team below 50 points and the fifth time under 60 points.
  • The 14 points scored by the Royals in the second half was the lowest point total for any R-MC opponent in any half this season.
  • The Yellow Jackets committed a season-low nine turnovers. R-MC has averaged 10 turnovers over the past four games after averaging 20 in its first three contests this season.
  • R-MC was whistled for a season-low six fouls after being called for 20 in its last game vs. Washington and Lee.
  • The Yellow Jackets matched their season high with 18 assists on 30 field goals.

Randolph-Macon will break for final exams next week before hosting the inaugural Suyes Yellow Jacket Classic. On Monday, Dec. 19, Mary Washington will face Stockton at 5 p.m. followed by R-MC vs. Merchant Marine at 7 p.m. The following day, the consolation game will be played at 2 p.m. with the championship game at 4 p.m.
