Cortland Edges Brockport, 63-60, to Maintain Share of SUNYAC Lead

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Cortland men's basketball team maintained its share of the SUNYAC lead with a nail-biting 63-60 victory at Brockport. The Red Dragons upped their record to 5-1 overall and are tied for first in the conference with a 3-0 mark. Brockport had a five-game winning streak snapped and is now 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the league. 
 
Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) led Cortland with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Cam Williams (Rome/Rome Free Academy) finished with 13 points, including two crucial baskets in the last minute and a half, along with three assists and four rebounds. Grunder and Williams each made three 3-pointers in the contest. 
 
Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) totaled 11 points and seven rebounds and Isaiah Preston (Penfield) notched career bests of eight points, six assists and three steals and also pulled down three rebounds. Freshman Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea) scored his first seven collegiate points and notched two assists and two steals in 15 minutes off the bench. 
 
Jahidi Wallace scored 20 points and hauled in 10 rebounds and Tony Arnold had 19 points, seven rebounds, five steals and two assists to lead Brockport. David Grady added 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. 
 
Cortland led 34-32 after a first half that featured six ties and five lead changes. Brockport led 38-34 with about three minutes elapsed in the second half before Cortland went on a 16-3 run over a five-minute span to take a 50-41 lead. Grunder scored seven points and Preston four during that stretch. 

Brockport still trailed by nine with eight minutes left before using a 9-1 run to close to within 57-56 at the 2:55 mark. Williams hit a jumper with 1:21 left to put Cortland up by three. Brockport missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with just under a minute left, but Monte Johnson grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. His two foul shots cut the Red Dragons' lead to one. Williams scored on a driving layup with 40 seconds left to re-establish Cortland's 3-point lead. Brockport missed a shot but got an offensive rebound, leading to a Grady dunk that closed the Cortland lead to 61-60 with less than 20 seconds remaining. 
 
Following a timeout, Brockport forced a five-second turnover on Cortland's inbounds, and Wallace was fouled with 10.2 seconds remaining. He missed both free throws and Cortland was fouled with about seven seconds left. The Red Dragons missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but Lubin got the offensive rebounds, was fouled and hit two free throws with 5.6 seconds left. After a Cortland timeout, Brockport was unable to get off a tying 3-point attempt before the buzzer sounded. 
 
Both teams had similar shooting percentages – Brockport at 40 percent overall and Cortland at 39 percent. Brockport held a 13-5 scoring advantage at the foul line, but Cortland made eight 3-pointers compared to just three for the hosts. 
 
Cortland travels to Plattsburgh next Saturday at 4 p.m. and Potsdam next Sunday at 2 p.m.
