Four Double-Figure Scorers Lead Cortland Men Past Geneseo, 82-62

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) scored 20 points to lead four Cortland double-figure scorers as the Red Dragons defeated visiting Geneseo, 82-62, in the SUNYAC men's basketball opener for both teams.
 
Cam Williams (Rome/Rome Free Academy) and Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) each finished with 17 points for the Red Dragons (3-1, 1-0 SUNYAC). Williams was 5-for-10 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and made all five of his free throws. He also grabbed five rebounds. Linehan scored 11 of his 17 points in the first half and ended the game 6-for-11 from the floor. He grabbed four rebounds and led the Red Dragons with three assists.
 
Humberto Cabrera (Millbrook) added 12 points, including 3-of-6 3-point shooting, and Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) ended with nine points and six rebounds.
 
Geneseo (3-3, 0-1 SUNYAC) was led by Sebastian Pacheco with 17 points and 11 points apiece from Chris Davis and Andrew Morrow. Davis led the Knights with nine rebounds, Cole Kattan finished with eight rebounds, and Harrison Dignan led the guests with seven assists and three steals.
 
Grunder was just 4-for-10 from the field, but he connected on 11-of-12 free throws and led the Red Dragons with seven rebounds and two blocks. He was limited to six points before sitting the final 8:50 of the first half after picking up his second foul. Cortland led 22-16 at that point and extended its lead to 37-27 at halftime.
 
Geneseo got back to within seven at 43-36 with 16:40 remaining in the second half, but Cortland went on a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to take a 56-40 lead. Grunder scored eight points during that stretch. The Red Dragons' lead grew to 20 points at the 7:54 mark and was at least 17 the rest of the way.
 
Cortland shot 44 percent from the floor and hit 26-of-30 free throws (87 percent). The Red Dragons were 8-for-27 from the 3-point arc. Geneseo ended the game at 39 percent overall and only nine percent (2-for-22) from 3-point range. The Knights were 12-of-20 from the foul line.
 
Cortland hits the road this weekend for SUNYAC games at Fredonia Friday at 7:30 p.m. and at Brockport Saturday at 5 p.m.
