James Leads Johns Hopkins to 82-63 win over York

BALTIMORE, MD – Senior Carson James scored a game-high 21 points to lead the 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team to an 82-63 win over York Wednesday night in non-conference action at Goldfarb Gym.
 
Back-to-back buckets from Sean Kelly and Jackson Mascari tied the game at 21 with 8:09 to play in the first half. Sophomore John Windley drained a three on the ensuing possession to put Hopkins back on top, but a Kai Cipalla putback on the other end cut it back to one.
 
Junior Colin Crothers made consecutive layups to kick-start a 12-4 run as the Blue Jays pushed out to a 36-27 lead with 2:17 on the clock. Freshman Charlie Jackson capped the run with back-to-back layups. Cipalla responded with a pair of baskets in the paint to slice the deficit to five and make it a 36-31 game at the half.
 
The Blue Jays came out firing in the second with Windley bookending a 9-2 spurt that saw JHU's lead grow to 45-33 just two minutes in. The Spartans cut the lead back to eight with buckets from Kelly and Mascari in a 30-second span. The Blue Jays responded with a pair of Jackson free throws, followed by back-to-back triples from graduate student Ethan Bartlett, and just like that the lead was 16 with 14:37 to play.
 
Chris Miers halted the run with a pull-up jumper, but graduate student Jayden Nixon answered with a three on the other end to stake Hopkins to a 56-39 lead. The teams traded scores over the next four minutes and JHU led 64-49. James then drained a bucket from downtown to spark a quick a 9-0 run that saw the lead balloon to 24. Hopkins would push its lead to as much as 25 with 3:03 to play before York closed the game on an 8-2 run to account for the 82-63 final.
 
The teams were tied at two after buckets from senior Sidney Thybulle and Miers. Bartlett then made a three-pointer, followed by a driving layup from James to put JHU up 7-2. Mascari scored two in the paint on the other end, but a three from graduate student Tom Quarry gave the Blue Jays a 10-4 lead with 15:57 on the clock. The teams traded runs as the Spartans pulled within one twice in the ensuing five minutes before finally tying the game at 21-21 at the 8:09-mark. That Windley three-pointer 13 seconds later gave Hopkins the lead for good as it turned out.
 
James led all scorers with his 21 points, while going 8-of-13 from the field and 5-of-6 from downtown. He also handed out six assists. Windley matched his career-highs with 16 points and five rebounds, to go with two assists. Bartlett added eight points and a game-high six rebounds. Mascari led the Spartans with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists. Cipalla also finished in double figures with 14 points.
 
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, November 19 at Lycoming. The non-conference contest is scheduled for a 3:00 pm tip.
