NYU Races Past USMMA at Home

More news about: New York University

After breaking the team record with 19 three-pointers and 39 attempts in a season-opening win over Farmingdale State on Tuesday, the New York University men's basketball team kept the long shots flying on Saturday, attempting another 39 treys in a 94-61 win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.

"I think we had some really good looks, and if the defense is going to give us, well, we have a lot of good shooters," said Head Coach Dave Klatsky. "We just have to make sure we're not only shooting three's when there are better shots available."

And, there were definitely some better shots in the offering as the Violets were able to dominate closer to the basket, earning 44 points in the paint to the Mariners' 20.

"That's  a good number. Forty-four points in the paint is terrific," Klatsky added. "Yes, we are a three-point shooting team. But, if you have a choice of a layup or a three-point shot, we're taking the layup all day."

The Mariners took an early lead in the game, but with the score tied at 14-14 Cinque Stephens hit a three-pointer and the Violets never trailed again. NYU made nine three's in the first half and led 49-21 at halftime.

The lead ballooned to 41 points in the second half when Holt Bashinsky's dunk with 7:59 left in the game made the score 86-45.

Quinn Clark recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds as five Violets scored in double figures and two others had nine.

Stephens led the balanced attack with 13 points. Michael Savarino had 12, while Bashinsky and Zay Freeney each had 11.

Spencer Freedman and Hayden Peek each chipped in with nine points, with  Freedman adding a team-high five assists.

And, after a shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line on Tuesday, the Violets kept that streak going with a 17-for-17 performance on Saturday.

"We're not going to shoot 100 percent on the year. We're going to miss some free throws," Klatsky admitted. "But that's a nice number to see and you will win some games that are close because of good foul shooting. We have good shooters who focus when they get to the line."

The Violets are back in action this Tuesday, November 15, when play their first road game of the 2022-23 season. NYU will tip-off against host College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, NY, at 7:00pm.
