#1 R-MC Men’s Hoops Pulls Out 3 OT Thriller at Hood

FREDERICK, Md. – Junior Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) scored a career-high 26, freshman Keishawn Pulley Jr. (Louisa, Va./St. Christopher's) tallied a season-best 20 points, and senior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had his first double-double of the season with 18 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team outlasted Hood 80-78 in triple overtime in the championship game of the Hood Tip-Off Tournament.

How it Happened:

  • Coble nailed a three-pointer and senior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) added a layup as the Yellow Jackets took an early 5-0 lead. The Blazers scored the next 11 points to go up six before a free throw by freshman Kyle Keener (Canton, Ga./Sequoyah) and a triple by Coble pulled R-MC within two at 11-9 with 12 minutes left in the first period. Hood extended the lead to eight before a 3-ball by Coble sparked an 8-0 run as the game was knotted at 19-19 with six minutes remaining. The Blazers closed the half on a 10-1 run to lead 29-20 at intermission. Coble had 11 points in the first half.
  • Coble sank a three-pointer to start the second half to cut the deficit to six. After a Hood triple, Coble hit another behind the arc to make it 32-26 before five straight points by the Blazers gave the home team a 37-26 advantage with 16:20 left in the second half. Mallory had two buckets to spark a 9-0 spurt as R-MC pulled within two at 37-35 with 12 minutes remaining. A jumper by Keener near the midway point of the second period allowed the Yellow Jackets to reclaim the lead at 39-38. R-MC trailed by two before Coble hit three free throws and Pulley hit a three-pointer to give the Yellow Jackets a 50-46 with 5:45 left. A Mallory layup with 2:25 remaining put R-MC up 54-50 before four straight points by Hood tied it at 54-54 with 38 seconds left. Pulley made two free throws with seven seconds remaining for the Yellow Jackets to go up two before the Blazers hit two foul shots with two seconds left to level the score at 56-56 and force overtime.
  • A layup by junior Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) started the scoring in the first overtime before a bucket and a free throw by Hood gave it a one-point lead. Foul shots by Pulley and Mallory gave R-MC the lead back at 60-59, and two free throws by Pulley made it 62-59 with 56 seconds left. A foul shot by the Blazers with 29 seconds remaining made the margin two. Keener made a free throw with 13 seconds left before a triple at the buzzer by Hood sent the teams to a second overtime.
  • The Blazers registered the first six points of the second overtime. Pulley made a free throw, Mallory had a layup and Coble hit a three-pointer with 34 seconds left to tie it at 69-69 and force a third overtime.
  • Coble hit a triple to start the third extra period. After a basket by Hood, Pulley buried a three to make it 75-71 with two minutes remaining. The Blazers had a 5-2 spurt to pull within one at 77-76 with 15 seconds left. Sophomore Vincent Payne (Frederick, Md./St. Maria Goretti) hit two free throws in his hometown with nine seconds remaining to make it 79-76. Hood had a quick layup with two seconds left to pull within one before Pulley hit a free throw with one second remaining to make the final 80-78.

By The Numbers:

  • Coble had eight field goals, seven three-pointers and three free throws, all career highs, to make up his 26 points.
  • Mallory had eight field goals and two free throws for his 18 points.
  • Pulley had five field goals, three triples and eight free throws for 21 points.
  • R-MC held a 47-33 advantage on the boards. Mallory had 18 and Mbangue grabbed eight.
  • Talbert paced the victors with seven assists.
  • Pulley recorded four steals.
  • In its second game of the season, R-MC had three players foul out. In 34 games last season, only six Yellow Jackets fouled out.

For the Record:

  • The last triple overtime game for the Yellow Jackets was a 111-108 loss at Emory & Henry on January 11, 2004. This was R-MC's first triple-overtime win since at least 1949.
