The 19th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team opened play at the Bill Sudeck Tournament with a 78-66 win over Oberlin College at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday night.
The Spartans improved to 2-0 on the year following the win, while Oberlin dropped to 0-2. CWRU will advance to the Sudeck Tournament Championship game on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. against Dickinson, which defeated Allegheny 78-62 earlier in the evening. Oberlin and Allegheny will face off in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The win was also the 12th-consecutive non-conference regular season win for the Spartans, dating back to last season.
Senior forward Cole Frilling notched his second-straight double-double to open the 2022-23 campaign, leading all players in the game with 28 points and 10 rebounds. He finished the game shooting 11-of-19 overall and four-of-seven from long range, while adding an assist, a block, and three steals.
Sophomore guard Sam Trunley came off the bench to add 12 points. Graduate student guard Danny Frauenheim finished the game with 11 points, a team-high eight assists, and three steals. Sophomore forward Umar Rashid added 11 points on a five-of-seven shooting effort.
After falling behind on a game-opening three-pointer by the Yeomen, the Spartans answered with seven unanswered points and never trailed again in the game. An 11-1 run by CWRU that stretched over two minutes and was capped off by a pair of free throws from Frauenheim put the Spartans up 39-23 with 2:31 to play in the first half, the team's largest lead of the frame. CWRU closed out the first frame with an 11-point lead, 41-30.
The Spartans went on to lead by as many as 22 in the second half, taking a 65-43 lead on a four-point play by junior guard Jeremy Callahan. The Yeomen trimmed the lead to as few as eight points down the stretch, but CWRU remained in control en route to the 12-point win.
CWRU finished the game shooting 50% overall (29-of-58), including 35.5% (11-of-31) from three-point range.
The Sudeck Tournament is named in the honor of late great Coach Bill Sudeck, who served the Case Institute of Technology and Case Western Reserve for a combined 46 years before his passing in 2000. Sudeck won 329 games in a combined 37 years as head basketball coach at CIT and CWRU. He also led the cross country and track & field teams for 46 years. In 1993-94, Sudeck was named North Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in all three sports – basketball, cross country, and track & field.
