LANCASTER, Pa. -- Junior Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) posted a double-double with game-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 79-62 non-conference basketball victory past Alvernia (PA) University in the first round of the William Marshall Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Juniors Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) and Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) each added 11 points for the Tigers, who led 33-23 at halftime while improving to 1-1. Melik Green scored 13 points for the Golden Wolves, who dropped to 1-1.
H-SC jumped out to an early 13-3 advantage at 15:39 following a basket inside by Hubbard, a three-point field goal from Elliott, consecutive three-pointers off the bench by sophomore Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN), along with a fast break slam dunk from Hubbard. The Tigers extended their lead to 20-7 at 8:23 following a pair of free throws by senior Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA), and the Garnet & Grey led 25-12 at 4:30 after a three-pointer off the bench from junior DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA). AU used an 11-5 run to close to within 30-23 late in the half, but freshman Ryan Blakey (Accokeek, MD) connected on a three-pointer off the bench to provide for the 33-23 halftime margin.
H-SC began the second half with a three-pointer by Brazil at 19:25, and a layup from Elliott pushed the margin to 38-25 at 18:58. AU used a quick 7-0 run to close to within 38-32, but the Tigers responded with a 23-2 outburst to take control at 61-34 with 10:19 remaining. H-SC got points from seven different players, including four points each from Elliott and Hubbard, along with three-pointers by Brazil, Wright and senior Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) off the bench. The Garnet & Grey took their largest lead at 63-35 at 9:55 via another fast break dunk from Hubbard, and following another three-pointer by Brazil and two more dunks from Hubbard, the margin was 70-53 with 3:36 left to play. A pair of free throws by Turner, a three-pointer from Hubbard, and 4-4 free throws by Blakey secured the outcome.
Hubbard led H-SC with his game-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double to begin the season. Brazil and Elliott each finished with 11 points for the Tigers, Brazil adding eight rebounds and four assists, and Elliott adding seven rebounds. Blakey contributed a career-high nine points, Clements had eight points, while McGowan and Wright each had six points. H-SC shot 45% (25-56) from the field, including 41% (11-27) on three-pointers, and 90% (18-20) at the free throw line.
Green led AU with his 13 points, adding six rebounds. Jalil Schenck had 11 points for the Golden Wolves and Nilgel Cooke added 10 points. AU shot 33% (21-63) from the field, including 25% (8-32) on three-pointers, and 80% (12-15) at the line.
H-SC will continue its weekend competition in the championship game of the William Marshall Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday, November 12, playing either host Franklin & Marshall University or Cairn (PA) University at 7:30 p.m. in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
