BALTIMORE, Md. - Christopher Newport University opened the season Wednesday night, and recorded a 74-61 victory at Johns Hopkins University. Junior Jahn Hines tallied a career-high 29 points as the fourth-ranked Captains downed the tenth-ranked Blue Jays at Goldfarb Gymnasium. Hines, an All-American from Norfolk, made 11 of 19 shots and scored 19 in the opening half and ten after halftime.

Johns Hopkins opened the game by scoring the first nine points, leading to a CNU timeout with 16:28 to play in the first half. The Captains followed the break by going on a 20-4 run, with sophomore Ty Henderson hitting a jumper to give the Captains their first lead, 15-13, and later draining a three-pointer to power the Captains to a 20-13 advantage. CNU went on to lead at the half, 36-26, and went up by as many as 18 in the second half en route to the 13-point triumph on opening night.

Junior Trey Barber registered a double-double for the Captains with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and also blocked seven shots for Christopher Newport. Barber was fourth in the nation in blocks last year as CNU led the nation in that category. Ty Henderson also reached double figures in scoring with ten points.

"We got some really good performances from a lot of different people," Head Coach John Krikorian said following the victory. "Jamaal Madison gave us a great spark with some excellent defense, and Collin Hines came in and really had some great energy off the bench. Those are things that don't show up in the stats, but really made a difference for us."

Christopher Newport made 27 of 63 shots for the night for 43 percent, and the Captains drained seven of 15 shots from three-point range for 47 percent. CNU's defense held the Blue Jays to just 35 percent (25 of 72), and JHU converted just three of 21 shots (14 percent) from long range for the night.

"It's great to get a win over a quality program like Johns Hopkins," Krikorian continued. "We've had some battles that have come down to the final possession, so I'm pleased we were able to win like this, especially on the road."

The victory was the third for CNU in four all-time games with Hopkins, and followed a 64-62 triumph last year over the Jays at the Freeman Center.

The Captains open their home schedule Saturday night at 7:00 p.m., hosting the University of Lynchburg (0-1) at the Freeman Center.
