William Paterson Men’s Basketball Captures Victory in Season Opener Against CCNY

WAYNE, N.J. – Four Pioneers scored in double figures as the William Paterson men's basketball team (1-0) secured an 83-75 victory in its home opener over the City College of New York (0-1) on Nov. 8.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • It was a back-and-forth battle for much of the night as the two teams continued to trade baskets. However, William Paterson trailed by three, 71-68, with 3:38 left in the game before a layup by sophomore Neftali Valentin sparked a 10-0 Pioneers' run.
  • After securing the lead, William Paterson iced the game at the foul line en route to capturing the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Pioneers secured a season-opening victory over CCNY for the second consecutive year.
  • Valentin led all William Paterson scorers with 19 points on 7-of-12 (.583) shooting.
  • Junior Shawn Summers Jr. made his debut for the Pioneers and logged 16 points with six boards and a pair of assists.
  • Junior Tyreek Montgomery recorded 16 points, nine boards and four steals.
  • Senior Michael Gilmore posted a double-double with 16 points on 5-of-8 (.625) shooting to pair with 10 rebounds.
