ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The University of Rochester moved into third place in the University Athletic Association men's basketball standings with a 69-46 victory over Carnegie Mellon University at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Friday evening.
Rochester's victory boosted the team record to 7-5 in the UAA, 15-7 overall. The Yellowjackets are one half-game ahead of Washington University-St. Louis. The Bears lost at NYU, 68-62. Carnegie Mellon is 11-10 overall, 4-7 in the UAA. CMU goes to Emory on Sunday.
Emory is in first place with a 10-2 UAA record, 17-5 overall. The Eagles defeated Case Western Reserve, 88-84. CWRU, which plays at Rochester on Sunday at noon, is 7-4 in the league, 17-5 overall. Washington is 6-5. The Bears play at Brandeis on Sunday. Chicago is 5-6 in the league after a 78-75 win at Brandeis. Maroons will play at NYU (13-9, 3-8 UAA) Sunday. NYU has won three straight league games.
Four players scored in doublue figures for Rochester, led by Matt Wiele with a career high 17points. He hit six of nine from the floor, two of three outside the arc, and three of four at the line. He was the only Rochester player to make a three-pointer. The Yellowjackets made up for that by scoring 46 points in the paint, some of which came in transition scoring. UR had 23 points from 16 CMU turnovers.
Brian Amabilino Perez scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and handed out a career-best six assists. Trent Noordsij and Ross Gang scored 10 points each. Andrew Jackson had eight points in 15 minutes off the bench.
Collectively, the Yellowjackets hit .482 from the floor (27-56), .133 outside the arc (2-15), and .684 from the line (13-19). UR shot .542 in the second half (13-24), stretching what was a 10-point halftime lead to the final score.
The Carnegie scoring leader was Sean Oberman who finished with 10 points. Josh Berry and Nick Nakasian had six points each. R.J. Holmes, Charlie Tripp, and Jack Stone had five points each.
A three-pointer from Stone and one free throw by Sax gave the visitors their largest lead at 16-10 in the first eight minutes. Rochester scored nine in a row: two free throws by Amabilino Perez, a layup from Wiele, a layup by Amabilino Perez, and another layup from Wiele. It was 19-16 UR with 9:27 left. The Yellowjackets pushed the lead to 10 with contributions from Matt Niemczura, Amabilino Perez, Noordsij, Wiele, and Jackson. That came after CMU edged in front by a point after Tripp's three-point goal.
