RADNOR, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team edged Cabrini University 68-65 on Thursday evening in Atlantic East Conference action.
Ryan Starr led four Knights in double-digits with 17 points. TJ Lewis tallied 16 points. Jalen Vaughns had another double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Tony James added 10 points.
In a game that featured 11 tied scores and seven lead changes, the final knotted score came with 2:05 left in regulation. Starr went 3-for-4 from the line in the final minute, and that was the difference in the 68-65 final.
Leading 11-10 five minutes into the game, Neumann scored eight straight points for a 19-10 advantage. A Cavaliers three-pointer with six minutes remaining before halftime put Cabrini in the lead, 26-25. The teams went back and forth and were tied at 35 heading into the break.
A layup by Vaughns to start the second half put Neumann in front. The Knights lead by as many as seven throughout the first part of the second. With 8:16 on the clock, the Cavaliers tied the game at 55. After two lead changes, the teams were tied at 65 with 2:05 left in regulation.
Neither team could make a field goal during the rest of regulation. With 51 seconds on the clock, Starr stole the ball and was fouled. The junior went to the line and made 1-of-2 for a 66-65 edge. After a missed Cabrini jumper, Starr was fouled again, and this time made both free throws for a three-point Neumann lead with 22 seconds in regulation. The Cavaliers had a chance to tie the game, but the shot didn't go, and the Knights held on for the win.
Neumann (18-6, 10-1 Atlantic East) will wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon when it travels to Marymount. Action is slated for get underway at 4:00 PM.
