RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 24 Yeshiva University men's basketball team bounced back on Tuesday evening by earning a convincing Skyline road victory over College of Mount Saint Vincent, 90-69, at Peter Jay Sharp Center.
Senior Ryan Turell surpassed 2,000 career points during the evening, becoming the first player in school history to accomplish the scoring milestone. For the game, he finished with 33 points and now has 2,018 points in his illustrious collegiate career.
The milestone-clinching basket came with 2:13 left to play in the opening half as Turell took a feed from classmate Eitan Halpert and drained a triple for career points number 1,999, 2,000, and 2,001. The basket also gave Yeshiva a commanding 42-28 advantage.
The Los Angeles native also finished the game with 10 rebounds, four steals, and a pair of assists.
"There's a reason we recruited Ryan five years ago and the world is just seeing why," Yeshiva University Head Coach Elliot Steinmetz said.
Graduate student Gabriel Leifer tallied his third triple-double of the season with 26 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Leifer surpasses Lior Hod ('88) for No. 5 on YU's All-Time Scoring List with 1,562 career points. Hod tallied 1,541 points during his playing days at YU. Leifer tied Hod when he hit his second free throw attempt that tied the game at 10 with 14:55 left in the first half. He moved into sole possession of fifth place when he forced a steal and converted a fastbreak layup that gave the Maccabees an 18-13 advantage with 11:39 left before the break.
With Yeshiva's (20-3 overall) victory, they remain tied with Farmingdale State College for first place in the Skyline standings at 13-2. However, the Rams own the tiebreaker due to a better record in the South Division. With the North Division winner guaranteed a top-two seed, Yeshiva would be the No. 3 seed if the Skyline Conference Championships started tonight.
Earlier in the game, Turell converted a layup that gave the Maccabees the lead for good at 14-13, with 12:20 left to play in the opening half. That sparked a run of 11 unanswered points that propelled YU to a 23-13 hold with 9:21 to go in the first stanza.
The Dolphins (9-14, 7-8 Skyline) managed to pull to within six several times throughout the half, but a 10-2 run by YU, capped off by Turell's milestone-clinching 3-point shot, inflated the Blue and White's cushion to 42-28. Yeshiva ended up taking a 44-33 benefit into the break.
Yeshiva led by as many as 26 during the second half, on its way to the important Skyline victory.
"Thought we defended better with intent and urgency tonight," Steinmetz said.
For Yeshiva, Halpert had four points, just as many rebounds, five assists, and a pair of steals. Graduate student Ethan Lasko had seven points, two assists, and just as many steals. Sophomore Oren Betesh knocked down two triples, had a pair of assists, and just as many steals. Junior Matan Zucker generated four points, six rebounds, and two assists.
No. 24 Yeshiva will host undefeated (22-0) and nationally ranked No. 5 University of Saint Joseph (Conn.), at Max Stern Athletic Center, on Thursday evening. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
