BOSTON -- Alex Kravchuk put in 19 of his game-high 27 points following intermission as the University of New England flipped a 12-point deficit into a 69-60 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball victory at Suffolk University on Tuesday night (Feb. 8).
The Nor'easters (5-17, 4-11 CCC) were behind by as many as 16 in the 1st half, including after the Rams opened with 8-of-10 shooting to take a 20-4 lead 5:31 into the match. It was 36-20 late in the frame before UNE logged six of the last eight to inch closer.
Kravchuk (8) and Avery DeBrito erased most of the gap just over four minutes into the 2nd, assembling a 12-1 run (39-38). Trailing 45-40, Kravchuk added a three-point play and followed shortly with a triple at 12:04 as the Nor'easters overtook Suffolk for good. Drake Gavin tallied all of his nine points during the final period, including the next six, and Kravchuk capped the string of 14 unanswered to set UNE ahead, 54-45, with 9:13 remaining.
Five from Anthony Senesombath then wrapped a 10-0 stretch that gave the visitors a 64-49 cushion with 4:28 on the clock. All told, the swing between the largest spreads for either side was a 44-13 difference in favor of the Nor'easters.
Kravchuk canned all four of his three-pointers in the 2nd, and shot 11-of-18 in the contest. DeBrito went for 14 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Senesombath matched Gavin's nine points in support. Ric Castillo grabbed nine boards to pad a 45-32 margin in the category.
After connecting at a 41 percent clip in the opening stanza (and 0-of-7 from downtown), UNE hit 53 percent of its live-action looks the rest of the way. The tale of the tape was reversed, and then some, for the Rams -- 46 percent, initially, and just 24 percent coming home. The Nor'easters also managed to overcome a 10-point scoring edge (12-2) by Suffolk at the free throw stripe.
Nate Hale led the Rams (12-7, 7-6 CCC) with 15 points. Aidan Sullivan compiled nine points, seven assists, and five steals. William Rowe, who tallied all of his seven points during the opening stretch, secured a game-best 14 rebounds.
