Hood hits 21 3-pointers, wins eighth straight

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College men's basketball team tied the school record by making 21 3-point field goals in a 93-63 win over York (Pa.) for the Blazers' eighth straight win. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Ten different players each hit at least one 3-point field goal in the victory. 
  • Ryan Hollwedel paced Hood with 13 points, knocking down three 3-pointers. 
  • Christopher Smalls went 4-for-7 from 3-point range and scored a dozen points.

How it Happened

  • Smalls, Evan Wang and Hollwedel each hit 3-point shots as the Blazers jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first two minutes and 10 seconds of play. The fast start was part of a larger 21-6 run as Hood hit 6-of-11 3-pointers to start the game. 
  • York pulled within 27-19 on a Chris Miers layup with 8:23 left, which proved to be the last field goal of the half for the Spartans. The Blazers limited York to 0-for-8 from the field with five turnovers from that point on, using a 19-5 run to take a 46-24 lead into halftime. 
  • Miers hit a 3-pointer for the Spartans early in the second half to cut the deficit to 18, but Hollwedel's 3-pointer with 18:19 to go started an 8-0 run and the Blazers' lead was never less than 20 the rest of the way. 

Analysis

  • Hood finished 21-for-49 from 3-point range (43 percent), tying the school record of 21 set against St. Mary's in November 2019. 
  • York shot only 30 percent in the first half and 35 percent from the game overall. 
  • Hood committed just 11 turnovers, resulting in a 20-10 advantage in points off turnovers. The Blazers had 13 steals on 19 Spartan turnovers, including three by Evan Wang
  • The Blazers' bench accounted for 42 points in the game. 

For the Opponent

  • Miers scored 21 to lead York. 
  • David Giuliani had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. 

Notes

  • Hood improves to 15-5 on the year and 12-1 in the MAC Commonwealth. The eight-game win streak is the team's longest since starting the 2019-20 season 8-0. 
  • The Spartans are 6-13 and 2-11.
