Mason Wang's strong finish propels Hood to seventh straight win

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Mason Wang scored 15 of his game-high 34 points in the final five minutes during a 21-10 run that gave the Hood College men's basketball team its seventh win in a row, 93-82 at Lebanon Valley in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Mason and his twin brother Evan Wang combined for 56 points for the Blazers. Mason Wang went 11-of-18 shooting and 5-for-11 from 3-point range and finished with seven rebounds and four assists. His final free throw of the game tied Santo Provenzano '06 for Hood's career record with 427 made. Evan Wang scored 22 points, hitting 6-of-11 3-pointers and 8-for-16 overall, to go along with six assists. 
  • Trumaine Strickland scored 12 points in just eight minutes off the bench.
  • Christopher Smalls grabbed nine rebounds and added three steals. 

How it Happened

  • After a layup by Luis Garcia tied the game at 72-72, Mason Wang was fouled while shooting a 3-pointer and sank all three foul shots with exactly five minutes remaining to make it 75-72.
  • Hood caught fire from there. The Blazers went 5-for-6 down shooting down the stretch, including a perfect 5-of-5 from 3-point range. Four of those 3-pointers came from Wang, one of which was a four-point play with 3:42 left that made it 82-76. LVC pulled within five, 85-80, on a pair of free throws by Colin Jones with 1:25 left but Wang it 3-point shots on each of the next two Blazer possessions to seal the win. 
  • Lebanon Valley had fought its way back into the game after a fiery start by the Blazers. Hood opened the game with a 44-18 run over the first 14 minutes and 11 seconds. The Blazers hit 16 of their first 23 field goals, including 10 3-pointers, behind 14 points from Evan Wang and 11 from Mason Wang
  • The tide began to turn after that, however, as Zach Tucker had eight points during a 16-5 run that closed the gap to 49-34 at halftime. 
  • Hood hit just 2-of-10 begin the second half and Jones scored 13 points in the opening seven minutes. Tucker capped a 23-7 run to open the half with a 3-pointer that gave LVC a 57-56 advantage with 12:40 remaining. There were 11 ties or lead changes over the next 7:40 before Wang's free throws began Hood's winning run. 

Analysis

  • The Blazers' 19 made 3-point field goals tied their season high, set just 10 days ago in a win over Stevenson. Hood finished 19-for-41 against the Dutchmen (46 percent). The strong afternoon from the perimeter resulted in a 50 percent mark from the field (30-for-60). 
  • LVC went 10-of-20 from behind the arc. 
  • The Dutchmen went 16-of-23 at the free throw line, all in the second half. 

For the Opponent

  • Jones and Tucker did their best to match Evan and Mason Wang, combining for 53 points for the Dutchmen. Jones ended the day with 30 points on 11-of-18 shooting and had 10 rebounds. 
  • Tucker hit six 3-pointers on his way to 23 points. 

Notes

  • Hood improved to 14-5 on the season and 11-1 in the MAC Commonwealth. The Blazers remained one game ahead of Eastern for first place in the conference standings. The seven-game win streak is the program's longest since beginning the 2019-20 season 8-0.
  • Lebanon Valley dipped to 6-14 and 3-10.
