CORTLAND, N.Y. – Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) led five Cortland double-figure scorers with 31 points as the Cortland men's basketball team defeated visiting Fredonia, 89-66, in SUNYAC play.
Grunder also led Cortland (8-10, 4-7 SUNYAC) with nine rebounds and three blocks, and he added three assists. He was 11-of-18 from the floor with two 3-pointers and he made all seven of his free throws.
Humberto Cabrera (Millbrook) finished with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from the 3-point arc, and he also registered two blocks, two assists and two steals. Riley McEvoy (Homer) filled the stat sheet with 12 points, seven rebounds, a career-best six assists and a career-high tying five steals.
AJ Lawton (Saratoga Springs) and Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) each scored 11 points. Lawton hit three 3-pointers and dished out three assists. Linehan made two treys. Also for the Red Dragons, Kareem Lubin (South Blooming Grove/Washingtonville) scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Fredonia (3-16, 3-9 SUNYAC), which had its two-game win streak snapped, was led by Aaron Collins with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the 3-point line. Matt Abersold hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points, and Kreem George finished the night with eight points, nine rebounds and five assists.
The first half featured six ties and 11 lead changes. Cortland took control in the last five minutes of the half with a 12-5 run that extended a five-point lead to 12 points, 49-37, at halftime. Fredonia hit 10-of-21 from the arc in the half, including all five of Collins' treys, but was just 13-of-32 overall from the field in the half. Cortland made 18-of-36 field goals in the opening period and was 7-of-18 from deep. Grunder scored 20 of his 31 points in the opening half.
Fredonia was within six points at 54-48 on an Alon Kremerman 3-pointer with 14:56 remaining. Cortland took over at that point, however, with a 13-1 run to go up 67-49 with 12:04 left. The margin was at least 14 the rest of the game. Fredonia hit only 3-of-10 treys in the second half and finished at 42 percent from the arc (13-of-31) and 42 percent overall. Cortland was 5-of-12 from long distance in the second half and ended at 40 percent from deep (12-of-30) and 47 percent from the floor overall.
The Red Dragons also held a 15-3 scoring edge on the foul line and committed only four turnovers compared to Fredonia's 15. Cortland had 21 points off of turnovers, while Fredonia had just four.
