Centenary Battles for 92-85 OT Road Win at Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Senior Harrison Lucibello scored seven of the team's 14 points in overtime to help the Centenary University men's basketball team battle for a 92-85 overtime win at Gwynedd Mercy University in Atlantic East play on Monday night.

The Cyclones improved to 2-0 in overtime games this season as Lucibello, graduate student Chris LaBelle, senior Billy Veras and sophomore Isaac Poueriet all scored in double figures.

Gwynedd Mercy opened up an early 12-6 lead in this one as Ty Jones connected on a three-pointer at the 14:01 mark of the first period.

The Cyclones and Griffins traded points over the next several minutes. A triple from Veras at 10:45 tied the game at 15-15.

Back-to-back buckets gave the home team a 20-15 advantage with 8:38 to go until the half.

The two teams continued to battle before an 8-0 run gave the Cyclones a 25-23 edge with 3:32 showing on the clock.

A pair of three-pointers put Gwynedd Mercy back on top, 29-28 with 2:12 remaining in the stanza.

Centenary scored seven of the final 11 points in the period and took a 35-33 lead at the break. Veras had five in that stretch while LaBelle accounted for the other two.

The Cyclones opened the second half on an 8-4 run and took a 43-37 lead with 16:11 left in regulation. Sophomore Trevor Giordano knocked down a big three-pointer in that stretch.

A lay-up from Lucibello at the 13:09 mark put the visitors on top, 47-41.

A triple from Lucibello with 9:49 showing on the clock gave the Cyclones their largest lead of the game, 57-48.

Gwynedd Mercy cut the Centenary lead to three, 63-60 but the Cyclones responded with the game's next five points and led 68-60 with 5:39 to go.

With the Cyclones leading 72-63 with 4:06 to go in the game, Gwynedd Mercy manufactured a 15-4 run that turned a nine-point deficit into a two-point advantage, 78-76 with 17 seconds remaining in regulation. Matt O'Connor had eight points in that stretch.

Veras connected on a jumper with seven seconds to go which tied the game at 78-78. Gwynedd Mercy's last shot fell short and the two squads headed to overtime.

In the extra session, Lucibello got the Cyclones off to a hot start with a triple on the first possession.

The two teams traded points as Shane Ford gave the home team an 85-84 edge with 2:07 remaining.

Centenary closed overtime on an 8-0 run and secured the 92-85 victory.

Centenary shot 47.9% from the field for the game and was better than 50% in the second half and overtime. The Cyclones matched their season-high with 11 three-pointers in the game. Gwynedd Mercy shot 46.9% from the floor. Centenary held a 38-32 edge in the rebounding battle.

LaBelle posted his first double-double of the season as he finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds and also added seven assists and two steals. Poueriet had his second double-double of the year as he contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds along with five assists and four steals.

Veras just missed a double-double as his stat line had 23 points and nine rebounds while Lucibello had the 17 points.

O'Connor led Gwynedd Mercy with 25 points.

Centenary is right back in action as it travels to Marymount on Wednesday, Feb. 2 for a 4 p.m. game.
