ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Collin Sawyer hit two three-pointers in a span of 2:15 late in the fourth quarter to fuel a game-turning run as Brandeis University defeated the University of Rochester, 66-61, at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Sunday afternoon.
He finished with 14 points for Brandeis. Dylan Lien scored 16 and produced three steals. Tommy Eastman had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Nolan Haggerty scored 12, blocked two shots, and had five rebounds. Brandeis evened its record in the University Athletic Association to 2-2. The Judges are 9-5 overall.
Rochester's scoring leader was Drew Jackson. He finished with 15 points. Trent Noordsij had 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Ross Gang scored 10 points, made two steals, and handed out six assists. Rochester is 3-4 in the UAA, 11-6 overall. The Yellowjackets are 4-4 over their last eight games.
This game featured eight lead changes and six ties. It was a mercurial first half. Brandeis led 10-1 and 18-8. With six minutes left in the opening period, T.C. Price hit a roll-around jumper in the paint. That set off a 15-0 Rochester run over four minutes. It pushed the Yellowjackets into a 30-22 lead with two minutes left in the half. Five players contributed. Jackson scored five points and Gang had four. UR led at halftime, 32-27.
Midway through the second half, Rochester nudged itself into a 47-43 lead. C.J. Amsellem scored on a layup, Jackson tipped in a bucket, and after one free throw from Eastman for BR, Gang drove for a layup and a 47-43 lead with 9:51 left. Haggerty dunked for Brandeis and Lien followed with a trey (48-47 BR). Rochester took the lead two more times with Noordsij suppling all seven points to get it to 54-50. A putback by Ryan Power got Brandeis within 54-52. Dan Masino's three-pointer from the top of the key gave Rochester its last lead, 57-52, with four minutes left.
Brandeis answered with a fast break layup from Hagerty, a tey by Sawyer from left wing, one free throw by Eastman, another trey by Sawyer – this one on right wing, and two free throws by Lien. The Judges led, 63-57, in the final 30 seconds.
