CWRU Bests Chicago 84-66 to Improve to 4-1 in UAA Play

The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team ran away from the University of Chicago in the second half of Friday night's game for an 84-66 win over the Maroons at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The win for the Spartans, who improved to 14-2 overall, sets up a massive game on Sunday afternoon against third-ranked Washington University (Mo.), which suffered an overtime loss at Carnegie Mellon on Friday night to fall to 14-2 on the campaign. The Spartans and the Bears will enter Sunday's game with identical 4-1 UAA records, putting them both half-a-game behind Emory for first in the league.

Chicago fell to 6-10 overall following the loss with a 1-4 UAA record.

Junior forward Cole Frilling led all Spartans with 17 points on Friday night, shooting seven-of-12 from the floor and adding seven rebounds, three assists and a block. Senior guard Robert Faller added 11 points and seven rebounds, while dishing out a team-best four assists. Eleven different players scored at least three points in the game for CWRU.

There were seven lead changes and two ties during a back-and forth first half. The Spartans trailed by as many as six points, but went on a 10-0 run over a two-and-a-half minute stretch that turned an 18-12 deficit into a 22-18 lead by the 10:36 mark. First-year guard Luke Gensler came off the bench to score five points during the run to boost the Spartans. The teams continued to exchange advantages for the remainder of the half, before a three-pointer by first-year forward Umar Rashid with 1:07 left in the half helped CWRU take a 34-33 lead into halftime.

Chicago regained the lead with the first basket of the second half, but Frilling answered with a three to put CWRU back in front, and the Spartans would never trail again in the game. The Spartans expanded their lead to double digits on a layup by Faller with 11:36 to play that made the score 56-46 and took a game-high 20-point lead, 81-61, on a three by senior forward Ryan Newton with 1:47 to play.

Frilling led the attack in the second half, scoring 13 of his 17 points during the period, and pacing an attack that shot 61.3% overall and 53.3% from long range during the half, en route to outscoring the Maroons 50-33 over the final 20 minutes.

CWRU finished the game shooting 50.0% (32-of-64) overall and 14-of-33 (42.4%) from three-point range, while holding the Maroons to just 42.2% shooting from the floor and only 16.7% (four-of-24) from behind the three-point line. Led by nine points apiece from Newton and sophomore guard Daniel Florey, the Spartans' bench finished with a 33-20 edge over the Maroons' reserves.

Chicago's Zach Munson led all players on Friday with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

The Spartans will be back in action on Sunday, wrapping up their four-game conference home stand against third-ranked Wash U. Tip-off at Horsburgh Gymnasium is scheduled for noon.
