Williamsport, PA (January 15, 2022) - Sophomore Mason Barnes hit a running floater off the glass with 1.2 seconds left lifting the DeSales University men's basketball team past Lycoming College, 54-53, in MAC Freedom action on Saturday afternoon.
The Basics
- Final Score: DeSales - 54, Lycoming - 53
- Records: DeSales (14-1, 7-0 MAC Freedom); Lycoming (10-6, 5-2 MAC Freedom)
- The win moves DeSales one game ahead in the all-time series at 16-15 vs. the Warrors. DSU is now 6-9 at Lamade Gymnasium.
- DSU now has a two-game lead in the loss column over all other MAC Freedom schools.
How it Happened
- The Bulldogs were ice cold to start the game falling behind 13-4 and continued to trail 18-8 with 8:24 left in the first-half when DSU went on a 14-0 run to take a 22-18 lead with 1:34 left in the half.
- DeSales took its largest lead of the half (27-20) with 40 ticks left and led 27-23 at the half.
- DSU led by six early in the second-half when the Warriors scored six straight points to tie the game at 31.
- It remained tied at 37 with 11:34 left before a 7-0 run led by four points from senior Timmy Edwards gave the Bulldogs a 44-37 lead with 9:13 to go.
- The Warriors chipped away at the margin and tied the game at 50 with 3:55 left.
- Edwards hit a lay-up with 1:55 remaining to put DSU up 52-50 but LC hit a three-pointer on the very next possession to give the hosts a 53-52 advantage with 1:27 on the clock.
- After two straight empty possessions the Bulldogs had possession still down one point and came out of a timeout getting a terrific look at the lead but Edwards missed a lay-up.
- Lycoming turned the ball over with 17 seconds left and DeSales called timeout with 13 seconds left.
- Out of the timeout, the Warriors took both of their remaining fouls to give as DSU took another timeout with 4.6 seconds left.
- Barnes threw the ball in out of the timeout to fellow sophomore Elijah Eberly who gave it right back to Barnes driving to the hoop and tossing up a running one-hander off the glass and in as a last second full court attempt from the Warriors was broken up as time expired.
Top Bulldog Performers
- Edwards was the lone Bulldog in double digits with a team-high 14 points off the bench.
- Eberly finished with nine points and Barnes had five.
For the Foes
- Steven Hamilton led all scorers with 19 points.
- Matt Ilodigwe had 13 points and Dyson Harward recorded a double-double with 10 points and 15 boards.
Inside the Box Score
- DSU shot 41.0 percent from the field and held Lycoming to just 31.1 percent from the field.
- DeSales took a season-low six three-pointers in the game.
- Lycoming out-rebounded the Bulldogs, 44-38, while DeSales dominated scoring in the paint, 44-18.
- The DeSales bench out-scored Lycoming's, 30-3.
