Rochester overruns Chicago, 78-52, to claim a UAA Victory.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The University of Rochester capitalized on an off-target night by the University of Chicago to post a 78-52 men's basketball victory in the Louis Alexander Palestra on Friday evening. The Yellowjackets evened their University Athletic Association record at 1-1. UR is 9-3 overall. This was Chicago's UAA opener. The Maroons are 5-7overall, 0-1 in the UAA.
 
Rochester placed four men in double figures. Andrew Jackson and Trent Noordsij led with 14 points apiece. Brian Amabilino Perez had 12 points and Ross Gang added 11. Eleven of the 17 players who played scored. Amabilino Perez added nine rebounds and five assists. Gang had four assists and three steals. Dan Masino had three steals and three assists.
 
Chicago was led by Bryce Hopkins with 16 points and Arrish Bhandal with 15. They combined for five of UC's eight three-point goals. Hopkins was 4-7 from the floor, 3-4 outside the arc, and 5-6 at the line. Bhandal was 6-10 from the floor, 2-5 from distance, and 1-2 at the line He grabbed seven rebounds.
 
Rochester sank 9 of its first 11 floor shots while Chicago was one of nine. The Yellowjackets used a 23-5 run over the first nine minutes to seize a big lead. Fourteen of the 23 points came on layups. The Maroons couldn't get untracked. It was 42-17 at halftime. The Yellowjackets produced 15 points from 10 Chicago turnovers in the first half, 28 from 20 giveaways for the game.

Some of the UR reserves had a chance to flourish in the first half. T.C. Price and Matt Wiele scored four points apiece. Price was 2-2 from the floor with a blocked shot. Wiele hit 2 of 3 shots and grabbed three defensive rebounds.
 
Chicago went through a mini-spurt, hitting treys for three straight baskets – two by Jackson Piotrowski and one from Alec Bryan – all within two minutes. Chicago got untracked somewhat in the second half, hitting 48.3% from the floor (14-29) and 6-15 at the line (40.0%).
 
The Yellowjackets shot 16 of 29 from the field in the first 20 minutes (55.2%) and 16 of 31 (51.6%) in the second half. UR finished at 53.3% for the game. UR earned 12 steals, had four blocks (two by Gang), and had 17 assists on 32 baskets.
 
On Sunday, Rochester will host Washington University-St. Louis at 11 a.m. The game is closed to spectators. Washington defeated Emory, 72-61, in Atlanta. The Bears are 1-0 UAA, 11-1 overall. Case Western posted its second UAA win of the season, 98-71, at NYU. CWRU is 12-1, 2-0 UAA. NYU is 9-2, 0-1 UAA. Carnegie Mellon's game at Brandeis was postponed.
