Balanced Scoring Leads #1 R-MC Men’s Hoops past EMU

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) had 17 points, one of four Yellow Jackets to score in double figures, as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team defeated Eastern Mennonite 82-55 on Tuesday evening in ODAC action.

How it Happened:

  • Sophomore Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) had two free throws and two buckets in the paint as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and would never trail. The Royals trailed 18-14 before a layup by senior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) capped a 9-0 spurt as R-MC took a 27-14 advantage with 7:45 left in the first half. A layup by Talbert pushed the lead to 14 at 32-18 with 5:30 remaining. Two layups by Junior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) extended the margin to 18 at 42-24 with 1:05 left. After an EMU basket, Mallory had a layup with 25 seconds remaining as the Yellow Jackets led 44-26 at halftime. Mallory and Talbert both scored eight, while senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) added seven.
  • The Royals cut the deficit to 13 at 48-35 before a pair of shots in the paint by Talbert and a three-pointer by senior DaQuan Morris (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill School) grew the lead to 20 at 55-35 with 14:30 remaining. A three-point play by Talbert gave R-MC a 22-point advantage at 61-29 with 11:45 left. Another triple by Morris pushed the lead to 26 at 67-41 with 8:45 remaining. Sophomore Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) nailed a three-pointer with 42 seconds left to give the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at the end of the game at 82-55.

By The Numbers:

  • The Yellow Jackets had four players score in double figures. Along with 17 by Talbert, Mallory had 13, Morris matched his career high with 11 and Anthony added 10. Sophomore Lance Johnson (South Riding, Va./Freedom) had a career-high nine and Funderburg finished with eight.
  • R-MC shot 50% from the floor (33-66) and 62% inside the arc (24-39). The Yellow Jackets had a 46-28 advantage on points in the paint.
  • The Yellow Jacket defense has held each of their past five opponents to 57 points or less. Opponents have averaged 53.8 points over the past five contests.
  • R-MC had a 35-23 edge on the glass. Anthony and Johnson led all players with seven rebounds, a career best for Johnson, while Mallory grabbed six.
  • The Yellow Jackets had 23 assists on their 33 field goals. Anthony paced the victors with nine.
  • R-MC committed seven turnovers, its second-lowest total of the season.

  • Anthony had three steals to give him 205 for his career, a program record.
  • Anthony had nine assists to give him 631 in his career, the second-highest total in program history and the second-highest total in ODAC history.
  • Anthony had 10 points to give him 1,614 for his career, the fourth-highest total in program history.
