UW-Whitewater Men Knock Off No. 4 UW-Oshkosh Behind Gray’s Career Night

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team surrendered a double-digit lead late in the second half but fought back in overtime Wednesday night for an 82-78 triumph at No. 4 UW-Oshkosh in an exciting Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in Oshkosh.

 

Derek Gray recorded a career-high 36 points on 14-of-27 shooting, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range, to go along with seven rebounds and four steals to lead the Warhawks (10-4 overall, 3-0 WIAC), who led by as many as 20 in the second half and held a nine-point lead with just under four minutes to play.

 

The Titans (12-2, 2-1) ran off the last nine points of regulation, including the game-tying bucket with 1:27 to play, to force overtime.

 

UW-Oshkosh led by three just under two minutes into the extra period, but Carter Capstran converted a put-back layup, and Gray scored five straight points, including the go-ahead basket with 2:03 on the clock.

 

From there, the Warhawks converted 9-of-10 from the free-throw line over the final 36 seconds of the game, including two by Drew Fisher to account for the final margin with less than one second to play.

 

Capstran finished with 17 points and six rebounds, and Fisher was also in double figures with 10 points to go with six rebounds. Trevon Chislom grabbed a team-best eight rebounds to go with his seven points and three blocks, and Caleb Flaten-Moore tallied six points, three rebounds and two blocks.

 

UW-Whitewater shot 50.8 percent from the floor, including 60.7 percent in the first half, and converted 14-of-20 from the free-throw line for the game, including 11-of-14 in overtime.

 

UW-Oshkosh held a 14-6 advantage with 12:36 remaining in the opening frame before the Warhawks embarked on a 22-0 run that was finished by Capstran's layup with 6:56 on the clock. Gray scored 12 points during that span.

 

UW-W's lead grew to 15 points at the 2:26 mark following a jumper by Fisher, and Gray gave the team its largest lead of the half at 38-22 heading into halftime.

 

Chislom and Jameer Barker scored on UW-Whitewater's first two possessions of the second half as the team's advantage grew to 42-22. The Titans cut their deficit to 11 points with 15:30 to play, but the Warhawks responded with a 12-4 run, including a layup by Fisher to make it 57-38 with 11:39 on the clock.

 

From there, UW-Oshkosh finished the half on a 24-5 run to erase its deficit. The two teams exchanged two empty possessions each over the final minute-plus of regulation.

 

Gray's 36 points are tied for the 22nd most in one game in program history.

 

UW-Whitewater visits UW-Eau Claire this Saturday. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m.
