Evan Wang reaches 1,000 in win over LVC

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Evan Wang scored his 1,000th-point and the Blazers shot 72 percent in the second half to defeat Lebanon Valley 89-83. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Wang reached 1,000 with a 3-point field goal to end the first half and finished the game with 15 points. His eight rebounds and five assists led the Blazers. 
  • Mason Wang scored a team-high 27 points on 11-of-18 shooting, including 3-for-6 from 3-point range. The senior added three steals. 
  • Christopher Smalls finished with 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting, connecting on 2-for-3 from distance. 
  • Trumaine Strickland went 4-for-5 with two 3-pointers off the bench to score 12 points. 

How it Happened

  • Hood led 37-33 at half before heating up in the second. The Blazers hit their first four field goals with Smalls and Will Pataki scoring before two buckets by Wang made it 45-36 with 17:55 to play. 
  • LVC cut the lead to 52-50 on a 3-pointer by Payton Lewis with 14:53 to go. Will Spencer hit a 3-pointer to start a 10-2 run. Wang scored five points in the surge before a layup by Smalls made it 62-52 at the 12:04 mark. 
  • After the Blazers took a 70-59 edge on a Strickland bucket, LVC used a 10-3 run to pull within four. Jevon Griffin hit two 3-pointers in the rally, including one that made it 73-69 with 6:20 left. 
  • Wang broke the momentum with a 3-pointer, but the Dutchmen eventually got back within four on a pair of Collin Jones free throws that made it 79-75 with 3:16 remaining. 
  • Jack Fricka stole the ball with 2:28 left and Wang was fouled at the other end. After hitting both free throws, he stole the ball and scored again to push the lead to 83-75 with 1:50 to go. Just 19 seconds later, Smalls slashed to the basket for a layup to for a 10-point lead, forcing the Dutchmen to call timeout. 
  • Hood struggled to make its free throws over the next minute, making just 1-of-5 before Smalls sank 3-of-4 in the final six seconds to seal the win. 
  • LVC led for much of the first half, but Hood never trailed by more than six points. A 3-pointer by the Dutchmen's Tyler Fritz with 4:34 left gave them a 27-21 lead. Evan Wang knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 27-24 on the Blazers' next possession. The field goal started a 13-6 run, culminating in Wang's 1,000-point on a 3-ponter with one second left for the 37-33 halftime edge. 

Analysis

  • Hood made 18-of-25 field goals in the second half (72 percent) and made a season-best 56 percent of its field goals on the night. The Blazers were also 7-for-12 from 3-point range in the final 20 minutes, ending the game at 13-for-28 (46 percent). 
  • The Dutchmen went 17-of-41 from 3-point range, attempting only 14 shots inside the arc all night. 
  • LVC held a 33-22 rebounding advantage. 
  • Hood turned the ball over just 11 times and had 10 steals on 20 Dutchmen turnovers. The result was a 26-16 advantage in points off turnovers for the Blazers. 

For the Opponent

  • Jones finished with a double-double and a pair of game highs with 29 points and 11 rebounds for Lebanon Valley. He finished 13-for-15 at the free throw line and went 7-of-10 from the floor. 
  • Lewis sank 6-of-14 from 3-point range on his way to 18 points. 
  • Zach Tucker had 14 points and four assists. 

Notes

  • Hood improved to 7-4 on the year and remained undefeated in the MAC Commonwealth at 4-0. 
  • LVC dropped to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the conference. 
  • Evan Wang became the seventh player in school history with 1,000 points.
